I went to a local bullion shop and they are wanting 150.00 for these 3 beauties... I was only able to get one obverse photo of them, was hoping someone could advise if this is a good buy? And as stated I was only able to get this one photo.
Culls are going for around $20-$30 I'd say the price was a bit to much($110-$120).Without seeing the reverses there might be a cc on the other side of one for all we know.
I was just about to say "unless they're CCs". Even S mints would still make it a good buy. But the likelihood of either is somewhere between "not worth going back to check" and "not worth the effort of double-clicking on an image to look more closely". They're almost certainly P or O.
I think that $50 each is really not to far out for what looks to be three nice lightly toned AU Morgan dollars. That being say I could write two paragraphs on things to look out for. Do not forget too factor in what you can/will learn from having coins like this and deduct that value from the initial cost. If they appeal to you, you will learn more from them. IMHO
Not a good deal at all I’m afraid. Those coins have been cleaned. Please pass on them. Philly and New Orleans mint marks are common in Morgan’s and that’s probably what they are.
I'd like to live in an alternate reality where these become cull, junk or melt value coins. Morgans aren't cheap anymore.
Sometimes you need to flip it around an think if you were trying to sell these to him, what's he going to give you and then decide how much premium you want to pay over that. If you see 3 Morgans like this that all have the same type of odd toning and then colored toning that's similar, there's a high chance that they were cleaned and re-toned together. It would be rare for a set of three to look this similar in the wild. Could they have been together since 1883, exposed to the same elements? I suppose it's possible but the likelihood of shenanigans is higher than that probability.
I assume $150 for all 3? Please be more specific. Are these all Philadelphia? Without knowing what or any mint marks are, you are just guessing. The Phillys are the more common dates for these 3 years. It's likely these have all been cleaned since he is a bullion dealer and not a coin dealer. And the person he bought them from may have cleaned them. Uncleaned they may be worth $50 each, so you are breaking even. Cleaned they are worth less. Melt value on these are $17.50 each, the bullion dealer will pay a little less than spot and should sell for a little more than spot. If he paid $16 each for these, it's a gouge that he is trying to get $50 each, when $30 is more reasonable.
Please, for the uninitiated (meaning me), what do you mean by "wiped"? I bought a "western set" of 1882CC, 1883CC, & 1884CC about 6 or 7 years ago for $1,500. They had been certified by NGC MS 65. If "wiped" is a derogatory term for damaging a coin, I would pass. I have trouble enough collecting coins that are in good condition. I think $50 is as good as any price.
