@Paulz It looks to me like those are gouges on the coin with metal pushed up on the right side of each gouge.......PMD! Chris
It was done with a hammer and a letter O punch. Google "counterstamped coin" and you'll get a feel for what they are. It was a big way for businesses to advertise in the 19th century but single letters like this are just seen as damage for the most part
