I got my first O-mint coin from a machine like that!

My family made a trip to the beach (probably Rehoboth) when I was in elementary school. One of the tourist traps had a coin vending machine. It was probably a quarter a shot at that point -- this would have been the early 1970s. I didn't get one of the pods with a folded-up bill, but I did get an 1892-O Barber dime. AG details, looked like something had chomped on the rim at one point, but I felt like I'd won the lottery. Still have it, too. :)

I would have done that as a kid. Most of the ones I received on the paper route (back in the sixties) lacked a readable date. :)

That takes me back, there was a piggly wiggly around here that had something like that when I was a kid and I remember bugging the heck out of my grandma for a quarter to get one.

Back in the early to mid '70's these were common in the bowling alleys. It cost, as I recall, a dime, maybe a quarter, but vast majority of the containers held wheat pennies for the 40's and 50's.

The owner of the bowling alley was headed our way by the machine and my friend removed the coin and put in a cigarette butt in it's place and returned the container in the outlet of the machine. When the owner got close enough he took it out and help it up so the owner could see the cigarette butt and said "Now, this is getting ridiculous". The owner didn't care for the humor. :)

Now that would be better. I trust you to make it a fair deal.

That'd be what I'd do. Buffs ihc v nickels etc. with the occasional barber dime or quarter or standing quarter for a bonus prize. A great idea for yn

I can vision one hanging next to the Trojan machines. Save up your quarters guys.
Edit to add: What's funny about this is the guy who has to decide which because he doesn't have enough change for both.

It's a gimmick for sure, but it might get a young person interested in collecting. Rest assured, though, its true purpose is (or was) to make the operator money.
