I sent this letter to the editor of Numismatic News a few weeks ago and they published it in this week's issue. Pretty cool, lol :D View it below...

I for one am sick of seeing all these boring coin series (i.e. Presidential series and many of the current circulating coins) with character-less designs. What ever happened to coins with character? When I think coin, the first coins that come to my mind are Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Standing Liberty Quarters, Liberty Head gold Double Eagles, Seated Liberty coins, and several others. These coins of yesterday have truly decent designs that are full of character. Each one of the coins mentioned have Miss Liberty on the obverse and most have eagles on the reverse. Why was Miss Liberty fired from circulating coinage? I can't think of one design with Miss Liberty on it that is not beautiful and full of unique character. I know I am not the only one of the opinion that Miss Liberty needs to come back. So, what say you? Should the mint continue to make boring and dull designs like the Roosevelt dime and the Jefferson nickel? Or is it time to refresh the boring coinage by making new designs featuring Miss Liberty like was originally intended by George Washington and others? I believe this topic needs to be put up as a poll on NN's (or the ANA) website. Back to Miss Liberty I say!!

Well done DJcoins. I agree. When I talk to non-collectors about coins, they are suprised that presidents weren't on coins a hundred years ago. Its much more interesting to have an artists vision of lady liberty on our coins.

    I also agree 1000%.

Think of the coins from 1907-1916.....

The Classic $10.00 Gold Eagle of 1907

The St Guadens $20 Gold of 1907

The Incused $2.50 and $5.00 Gold of 1908

    The Buffalo Nickel Of 1913

The Winged Liberty (MERCURY) Dime of 1916

The "Standing Liberty" Quarter of 1916

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar of 1916.

These are the Most recognised and beloved and appreciated and collected of all US coins.

You might want to add the Lincoln Cent (1909) to this list.

This Ten Year span of US coins represents the best artistic, and aesthetically apealling coins the world has ever known. Not to mention The Most Collected.

Some of the most popular US Mint re-issues of the last 20+ years have involved a lot of these coins.

We need to renew the classical artistic vision of US coins from that special 10 year span from 1907-1916. Not States Quarters, or Presidential Dollars. Or Spouse thingies.....

Thanks all...I was kinda surprised when I saw it on the second-to-last page of letters...I had finished reading the previous letter and moved on to the next when I realized I was reading my own, lol. :mouth:

It would be nice if the mint or whoever authorizes coin changes would read all this...IMO it's time to start from scratch with some new Liberty and Eagle designs.

I agree to an extent. Miss Liberty IS the lady for coins as is the eagle. Only problem is "new" designs.
I'd hate to see one common theme throughout. You know, like Barbers and Seated Liberties. Don't get me wrong I LOVE those coins especially the Bust designs that I have not mentioned until now.
What would a new Miss Liberty look like and how many ways could you represent her on different denominations? Food for thought as we haven't seen her in a while.

Dead Presidents are on EVERYTHING. Coins are boring and currency has reached an all time low in my opinion. The only note I like is the $2 because of the reverse. Jefferson's already on the nickel.

Yep, we need some new designs and one might even consider more abstract like the 2 Cent, 3 Cent Silver and Shield Nickel concepts.

Overall a very good post. Really makes one think.

I'd like to see the Liberty design back on U.S. coinage myself. I cant think of any coins that depict Liberty that arent beautiful.

    I sonewhat agree with you...

I do like the older ""Classics" better than the newer ""Moderns" all though I like the Moderns some too...

However, I don't think the designs of "yesteryear" can come back unless they are exact copies...

I mean, who is going to Design them??? The designers of those series are obviously long gone... The designers we have now are "New School"...

Wouldn't you think if they could do stuff like that, they would???

Plus the country is way different today then it was then... I don't think liberty means the same or as much as it did then to most... (Most not all)... Times change and not always for the better...

    Wow, talk about a [IMG]!!!!

    BTW, Welcome to the Forum...

You'd prolly have better luck either starting a new thread or using the forums search button and searching for keyword "inventory" or "Software"

I disagree. It just shows how uncreative die engravers, designers etc are these few years. In fact, look at how many "reproduction" there are. Buffalos, eagle etc. Looks like designers are pretty much brain dead these few years.
