The latest absurdity in slabbing coins is designating the "A" and "B" varieties of presidential dollars, depending on the orientation of the edge lettering. I had a letter published in the May 29, 2007 Numismatic News about this.

"With slabbing of alternate orientations of edge lettering on Presidential dollars, we've seen a new standard set in making something out of nothing.

What's next, slabbing "heads" and tails" separately?"

Does this mean that complete sets of presidential dollars will have to include both orientations of every dollar from both mints?

Oh and guess what? You're going to need special new holders and albums so you can actually SEE what the heck they're talking about. Dansco and company are probably rubbing their hands over this as well!!

I have to agree with you. The dollar coins are just another made-for-the-collector's-market coin series. I continue to prefer the "classics" to the "moderns."

^^^I agree with both you guys. Giver me 100+ Year Old Silver any day. I've only seen one of them and have no desire to own one...

Funny enough, the rest of the world had edging technology for at least a good one hundred years. When the president coins appeared, it seemed that lettered coins were a new state of technology. Extremely hilarious. Now edge A and B. Why don't the slabbers put that on all world coins? Simple - no demand. Right.

Well, it's a way to sell more slabbing services, isn't it? If everyone needs two slabbed coins instead of one, that's a quick way to double your business, right?

I personally don't like them, and only am going to collect the proofs. How much is the proof set? But I agree with ya, it is ridicoulous.

So did the US, 200 years ago

Interestingly so people who have had president dollars slabbed recently got them back from PCGS without the A & B designations. I'm wondering if it is possible that they have already realized it was a mistake and quietly dropped the whole idea.

The different lettering orientations were a curiosity and I was lucky to get all four Washingtons (two P and two D) out of the change machine at the Minneapolis airport, trip #3, which I put in Thalia Elizabeth's binder.

But I don't see myself putting in any effort to do the same on any of the other issues. In fact, I completely forgot to take an Adams from my dad who got a roll of them at the bank!
