Hey all new, Marcus Aurelius (161-180), As, Rome, AD 176-177; AE (g 10,35; mm 25; h 11); M ANTONINVS AVG GERM - SARM TR P XXXI, laureate head r., Rv. [IMP VIII] COS III, ship l. with four rowers, Neptune standing l., holding trident and dolphin or aplustre; above, FELICITATI AVG P P; in ex. S C. RIC 1192; greetings
A little rough, but appropriate to the troubled back story it commemorates! The Felicitati legend alludes to the safe return of Aurelius to Rome in 176 AD after a long trip through Asia. His wife Faustina died at Halala (in Cappadocia) during the earlier part of the trip, and on the last leg, while crossing the Ionian Sea to Brundisium, the emperor and his son survived a violent thunderstorm that nearly wrecked their ship.
