so I went into one of my banks today to get some rolls of pennies off of them, I asked the girl at the counter if I can have some rolls of pennies. This time she actually recognized me. But she asked me this time if I have a bank account with them, I said no. She asked why not? I said because I already have two accounts open with different banks and do not need another. She told me " well we are really only supposed to do this for accounts holders only" I told her I've been coming in here for sometime and they never said anything about it and my other banks never said that to me. I would understand if I was ordering boxes at a time but I only ask them for $10 worth of pennies..has this happened to anyone or anyone had to open an account just to get a few rolls off of them? I just don't see the need in having an account for $10 worth of pennies at a time.
Having boxes of rolls delivered to the bank costs them money, even $10 is 20 rolls and almost half a box. You basically cost this bank money and provide no revenue for them so it's not surprising they want to know if you have an account. I wouldn't be surprised if next time they tell you no, as banks refusing for non account holders is common.
I hit 5 banks all in one day and this bank is the only to ask me that.. Ever other bank is happy to help me. Even the banks I have accounts with don't even ask me.....just they was she goes...
I remember when air for your tires was free, before the owners realized that much of the expense was for people who didn't buy their gas or services. Lucky some banks haven't caught on, or think that people will get accounts for the service. Some banks won't complain if a person asks which day would be best to check for coins. A little social engineering like a candy, Indian head cent, etc, is worth the trouble.
I think tellers assume that people don't go to banks they aren't members at. It's been hit or miss for me.
Eventually, the other four banks will follow suit because the banks are paying for the delivery of coins. You've just been lucky for this length of time. This also goes for the others who complain when their banks start charging them a service fee. They moan and whine that they don't use their bank to dump the coins, but that doesn't mean that account holders from other banks don't use your bank to do the same thing. You gotta pay to play! Chris
I try to go in when they are empty and try to make a less of inconvenience to them. I find the older tellers don't care but the young ones are on the fence. It will cost them more to open an account because I'll never put money in it. All in all they are going to have to order more rolls no matter what and I'm sure it's not costing them much at all. The should ease up. If I'm ordering boxes and boxes a week I'll gladly open an account but if I'm just ask 10$ once a week I don't see the harm.
Most banks are required to keep their change inventory at a minimum and used mostly for regular customers. Depending upon your finances, it would not hurt, with interest rates so low, to open a low value savings account with the minimum required to avoid account fees and just leave that money there so you are a legitimate customer. And then be fair and do them a favor...when you ask for your rolls, also ask if they have any half dollar or dollar coins they would like to unload. They hate having to hold onto these and have to count them every day. After you search these extras unload them somewhere else, like at a restraunt for tips. And always smile when they don't have what you want as you need to remember they are only following the rules set forth by their superiors.
When asking for halves, I almost never get asked if I have an account. I've only been turned away maybe twice out of maybe 50 branches visited. But when I ask for rolls of pennies, nickels, etc from a bank that's not my own, I almost always strike out. Not sure why that is, other than maybe they're happy to get rid of odd denominations. When turned away, I try to be as polite as possible, but I also let them know that their attitude/policy has dissuaded me from considering their bank for new accounts.
I have been getting a box a week more or less from a bank we have accounts at. Some weeks the higher ups won't let them order for me, if they don't need a mint delivery for any other reason that week. Lately when I walk in they sort of cringe. haha. I went to a different branch and they said "oh come here any time you want". I went there yesterday and they had $4.00 CWR I got and they asked if I wanted a box. I said how about 2? They took my phone number and are going to call me when they arrive. Let's see how long it is before i wear out my welcome there.
If you think that the banks are not inconvenienced by this, then why don't you open your own bank? Chris
One bank I went to said that they only give out coins to customers, so they can save the coins for their customer base. One I visited today ask if I was a customer, when I said no, they said we hope to have you as a customer some day. Which do you think I would use if I wanted a new account. If a bank says they only give to customers i ask if they have any halves or dollars they would like to get ride of. I get those, and some silver sometime.
Sucks since they are they only ones that always has halfs and I just found a 98 WAM form them the other day.
Cookies, tickets for the baseball game, hockey game(season ticket holder), candy, gift cards from Tim Hortons - and yes the occasional Peace Dollar, a folder for pennies and rolls of wheats to search - they have all worked for me.
I went to a bank today and tried to turn 100 ones into a 100 dollar bill. They told me that they can only do that for customers and that they need a debit or bank card to even be able to do it. I thought it was ridiculous since all the other banks ive been to have never asked that before
They are just giving you a hard time so you will open an account with them so they can collect that monthly maintenance fee, because there's so much maintenance for a self running program and for some reason they charge themselfs for doing it.. If I'm not making a deposited or asking for a loan then I should be able to use minor services like asking for pennies or exchange 100 ones to a single bill.., I mean isn't that half the reason we have banks is for services like that?
