I knew it was on a chunky little flan but in hand it's really chunky. I knew I wanted one without a test cut and I love the look of the owl. CNGs pics, then mine. This is next to a silver eagle for comparison Just got it 10 minutes ago and had to share. Jim
I think everyone likes these owl coins. Yours is a wonderful example. It does look like Athena is sporting a nose ring.
The three dots for nostril and lips didn't look as weird in their pics. I'll just chalk that up to individuality. Extreme close ups aren't good for most things or people.
Good idea. 400 Pixels x 400 Pixels is best, (as was pointed out to me by another member). Yes, smaller photos aren't "in your face" as much. Lovely "Owl", by the way.
Super OP-winner, H8 (congrats) ... man, that is a fat lil' baby, eh? I have a chubby example as well, but my sweetie has a couple of Zorro test-cuts on 'er ... Athenian Attic Owl AR Tetradrachm Mint: in imitation of the contemporary coinage of Athens (Egypt or Syria) After Circa 413 B.C. Diameter: 26.4 x 22.2 mm Weight: 15.2 grams Obverse: head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves along the front edge, palmette on bowl, and spiral behind ear, her hair drawn across forehead in parallel curves Reverse: AΘE (the first letter represented as a triangle) before owl standing right, head facing, in erect posture, olive sprig and lunar crescent in upper field to left, all within incuse square Reference: cf. Kraay (Archaic and Classical Greek Coins) pp. 73-74 and pl. 12, 204 Other: two deep test cuts on owl’s head and wing => authenticated and attributed by David Sear => again H8, that looks like an awesome new addition (you're buying some sweet coins lately)
I got a New Style in my ebay store, if someone wants to pay $1500 I'll take it otherwise $500 is my number...just saying.
New styles don't go for the same price. I have picked up a few, but am still waiting for the OP style.
I did some looking a while back on eBay, and, from what I could tell if you wanted one that was reasonably well-centered, with most of the obverse design on the flan, and a VF-ish amount of wear, those seemed to start at somewhere around $800. $1200 would get you a really nice one.
