Here is a 1950 proof set that was in a Capital Plastics holder. It had been sitting in a bullion dealers case for months. I was able to talk him down $125.00 in price. I was really wanting the Lincoln Cent that was included. The Jefferson Nickel is cameo, but it has a bit of verdigris on the reverse. The Franklin half is borderline cameo, but I don't quite think it's there. I bought the set to break up and piece out. Let me know what you think?
I would have bought it just for the cent. Pretty coin. The half looks a bit rough for a proof. As a normal the half is the money coin in this proof set. The cent makes up for it.
The Cent looks like it might be a Satin finish rather than brilliant. Does it have a super reflective field, or is it more satiny with flow lines? My Satin '50 Cent is one of my favorite coins.
Looks like a die crack on left field of half. A couple of hairlines on cheek and right field. A gorgeous cent! A great quarter with only a couple of tiny ghost spots[maybe from the dipping]. Typical "grainy" look as is with most 50,s. Only slight brown toning. Congrats. what a nice find!
Love the cent. For $125 that's a steal. I still need 50, 51, and 52 for me to be finished. Great pick up!
For clarification, I talked him down $125.00 from his asking price of $525.00. Take home was $400.00.. Not exactly as steal. But the cent is what sealed it for me. Had the cent not had the color it has, I would have passed on the set. @rmpsrpms the cent is semisatin. More so on the obverse than the reverse. The mark in the left obverse field of the Franklin looks like a minor lamination to me. It's slightly raised almost like a die crack yet it's mirrored. I'm having a tough time identifying it. @chascat Those spots on the obverse of the quarter are some kind of hazy material on the surface.
It looks like the faint remnants of typical brown toning as is on the other silvers, now that you mention it. Chascat
Just curious, the dime, quarter, nickel, and half look like they have doubling on their portraits on the front of their faces. On the half it looks real strong on the forehead and the dime looks strong as well along the face as well as something different about the left stem as it just does not look right to me. But what do I know I am Canadian? lol Is this just an optical illusion from the pictures or do they have doubling? If they do, is that typical of proofs of that year?
It's just a reflection of light. There is no actual doubling. The reverse of the dime does have what appears to be a die gouge coming through the U of E. Pluribus next to the branch.
