Natural or Artificial Toning?

The hand held ARE expensive "toys" but every "big" dealer should have one. They help spot fakes also.

Question. Each time I've seen a test performed with X-Ray Diffraction the sample needed to be "treated" at the site to lower contamination as the instrument did no reach deeply into the coin's surface. Is that still the case?
