1983 P quarter. What is wrong with the reverse?

What are the wavy looking lines on it? What Causes that? Is that just wear of the coin?

Just looks like it was struck using a die that was well into the end of it's life. The flow lines in the die were worn very deep by the time this coin was struck.

OK. I have never seen that before.

The deterioration can take on different looks. There are some with small parallel lines or striations emanating outward toward the rim; there are those like yours with humpity-bumpity marks all over, and then there are also those with the "orange peel" effect that is all pimpley-dimpley.
