Is the date just worn off or was it never there ? Hard to tell by the picture.

It does not appear worn and it looks like a crack/lamination error going around the the edge next to rim. Look at the 'T' in trust on the right of it.

I can tell you, but I need you to tell me the date,.....just kidding. I have no clue. Could be a worn die, just not sure. What date did you say it was? ;-)

Hard to call for me. It seems the coin has a lot of wear and perhaps the date was eroaded away by some type of chemical or mechanical process. This is just my opinion only. In my years experence with coins I have never seen another one just like this one. It may be worth keeping and doing some more research on it. Sorry I cant be of any futher help to you.

It does appear to possibly, may be (enough caveats for you?) struck with a greased die.

It really looks like it was struck through a grease die and circulated un-noticed until now. I don't think it was worn down because other portions on the coin are not. Unless it was doctored for one of those once in a life time ebay sales.
