I think the big 2 get it right at least 95% of the time , especially on altered or detailed coins . Do I agree with all the grades , no though they're usually within a point of what most impartial graders would give them . Would I want to go back to pre tpg days when a coins grade would change when selling and buying from the same grader , heck no . For the most parts tpgs , like them or hate them have given us some semblance of order in a highly personal endeavor .
This one now resides in a straight grade ngc ms 62 slab. Lost the Newman pedigree with the crack out. The surfaces are much better in hand then in these pics. Has been dipped years ago. But not a line on it
Why thank you..... now in return, please allow me to throw you a bone. http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dime...gc/a/1122-930.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515
Here's another example of pcgs dropping the ball. I bought this one slabbed sight unseen. I'd have never touched it in hand. Crappy images but in hand it's got toned over cleaning hairlines all over it and NEVER should have graded straight
Wow that's interesting. So someone tried to upgrade the old ngc holder. Got a details. Dumped it back thru ha. I bought it cheap for around $190 as I liked the look despite the details grade. A couple years later I crack it and resubmit it and it's back in a 65 holder. I still think is no better than a 64. But I sold it for $975 wholesale
for about the past 6 months i have noticed that both pcgs and ngc have been giving grades that are at least 2 points lower than their usual grading scale for any given coin. and they always seem to find a reason to give at least a few coins a details grade.
That's been the last 2-3 years. I've noticed ngc usually only gives details with a valid reason. Other then questionable toning. Pcgs has been all over the place. Some of the coins I felt were spot on some a bit low some slightly higher than i thought a few of the detail graded coins I really questioned tho
Whoever cracked that is certainly a risk taker. Not entirely sure what they were thinking with that one, seems to be in its proper place from the photos at 65. They really have been very tight lately. PCGS was brutally tight on most things for most of last year. Was almost like they got spoiled with all the insanely high end collections they were grading for auction and everything else just looked terrible by comparison.
I still think we're seeing the exceptions to the rule , most PCGS and NGC coins that I see slabbed are in the right slab or a point off which is to be expected because grading is so subjective . Go to Heritage at any time and show me how many coins you can find in regular graded holders that should of been detailed . Sure it happens but far less than what we're seeing here . Most coins are graded correctly or at the most one point off . Just my opinion on my experiences and from what I see for sale or auction .
Problem is. I'm not ha that gets some of this caca slabbed. I think with the smaller guys like me they'll nuke a few to ensure I keep sending them. And I do To a point
They don't do anything to the grade to try and get you to resubmit. You may have just missed something they saw, it could have been borderline and not gotten the benefit of the doubt, or it could just be the simple fact that if you ask 100 people what should merit a details grade you will get a 100 different answers. Some basic things will be included by everyone but when it comes to smaller issues or toning ect everyone has a different definition of what crosses the line into details territory. It's true most submissions will have a details grade in it, sometimes it is expected sometimes it is not. A lot of the time with close examination on the unexpected the conclusion is yea I missed that and can see it now but yes sometimes you do say are you kidding me details grade for that is overly picky. With that said plenty of smaller guy submissions go through without any details grades in them, it is really just more sometimes they get a little too overly nit picky on somethings if anything. Then again they get criticized for every little minor thing from a picture on the internet so I cannot really blame them.
I don't disagree I miss stuff occasionally. And there's plenty of borderline coins out there some go some don't I try to pick coins that will grade. The hardest stuff is toners that they often nuke for qc tho I see many questionable coins in holders
Yea toning is an entirely different animal. Part of me wishes we could come up with a better system for that instead of just okay or questionable given how subjective it is on most of them. What that system should be I don't know, but colorful toners are without question the most frustrating submissions sometimes.
