Actually collecting MS70's is much worse than what we were all expecting :p

The key is: you are paying a HUGE premium to spot silver by collecting slab only and MS70 only. You need for either the premiums to be maintained, which could be difficult since unlike older coins they always come out with new ones each year.

The other way for your coins to be dragged up is by bullion silver rising, but you need a big move for that, assuming premiums don't expand, too.

As long as you know the risk that you are taking, I have no problem with it. Have done it with a few coins but that's all.

As long as you know this is a one way street.... dealers selling and no dealers buying.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a particular collecting goal such as MS/PR70 Modern Commemorative.

Hopefully, you had them graded instead of buying them on the aftermarket. That would be where the real satisfaction would come from.

If not and they were purchased on the aftermarket shortly after their release, there is nothing I could say which would possibly assuage the feelings you'll experience should you ever decide to sell them.

I have many, many modern coins which I purchased at perhaps the wrong time to which I'd really like to be rid of. However, I simply cannot face the loss of both money and face since I was well warned about the volatility of the modern coin market.

None the less, I'm proud of some of my accomplishments in both finding and purchasing some of my treasures. My children will probably validate my insanity when they compare what I paid vs what they can sell them for but then, I won't be around to apologize.

    Collect what you like.

For some perspective (and my own sanity) I once purchased a 60" Big Screen TV for about $2,400 back in 1995(?). It was great! A behemoth of an appliance which you had to be right smack in front of in order to not get fade on the edge of the screen! I finished a basement around it and was very proud! Surround sound, ceiling speakers, tuner, the whole ball of was!

After 10 years, when it was time to move, I couldn't sell it but had to give it away to a kid down the street. All he had to do was haul it off!

Some of my coins fall into this category despite the promise I felt were in them when I bought them but, like the TV, I enjoyed the hell out of them!

Some folks like new cars and keep them in pristine condition. Others like antique cars and work hard to bring them back to life. I like any type of car as long as it starts and gets me there safely. My collection resembles my like in cars. I'll collect any of them if the price is right.

Yeah, I'm not sure what he means by 'commemoratives' -- does he mean non-regular issue coins, like something for Veterans or is he talking slabbed MS70's of regular ASEs and reverse proof Eagles and enhanced finish Eagles ?

    Eagles are not commemoratives.

Great, this thread has that Pink song stuck in my head now... Bravo for a good misdirect op!... I would have put it in GD though to go the extra mile :)

Right, but wasn't sure that applied or didn't apply to special ASEs like Reverse Proofs, Enhanced Finishes, etc.

My name is Bill. I recently committed heresy by purchasing about a dozen Zombucks. Is there an exchange where I may buy some coin heresy absolution? :(

I guess the prime reason I don't collect moderns is that I probably won't be around to see how much, and if they become valuable. If I was still a spring chicken I might feel differently.:woot:

Looks like we lost another one to the TV salesmen. JK. I don't get it, but to each there own. I like my moderns raw and in a dansco, but that doesn't mean that I go after low quality coins.
