After getting no response from the mint, I wrote to CW to see if they could find out what happens to the unsold coins produced for collector only bags & rolls. I received this response from CW: From the Mint: The dollar and half dollar coins that are produced for rolls, bags or boxes that do not get sold are held in Mint inventory until they can be recycled and used to produce dollar coins in the future. The 5.6 million production figure for the 2014 Native American Denver $1 coins found on the Mint’s website was a clerical error and is being corrected. The correct number is 2.8 million. Based on the above statement from the mint, even though the 2014-D NA Dollars will be corrected to 2.8M, the final sales (and mintage) is 1,296,875. Similar final sales (i.e. lower than mint production figures) applies to most of the collector only bags & rolls. Hopefully The Red Book and others update these final sales (mintages).
I wish these circulated because at these low mintages they would be worth something if they did circulate.
I wish more wanted to collect them, that would help the value a little, maybe someday. I just "weeded" out a couple hundred low grade President Dollars from my rolls and have been spending them around town. Most of the clerks have responded with, "Cool, I'm keeping these".
I'm betting they never sell for less. The premium is pretty low now and you get to cherry pick the bag/roll.
I have no problem with the coins at all or buying from the mint. Just rather put my money else where.
There are a lot of people who think paying a premium for bags from the Mint is risky. All of the MS68 SQ's, Kennedy's and Sac's that I submitted for grading sold for $150 and up, and the one below cost a whopping 68c. Chris

Yep! I was surprised and grateful that someone cared to do the work and respond. Now, if only the Red Book and others would care enough to update the mintage figures, as in many cases the difference between production and sales is substantial.
That's the exact response that I get when I spend them which only augments the fact that its not the public which is rejecting them. It's the distributors and the fact that they can still order dollar bills. Remove the dollar bill option and we'd have a market.

Yes! The Mint released the 2001 Mixed P&D Kennedy half dollars in $50 bags in late 2004. The 200-coin bags cost $135 (67.5c per coin) and sold out pretty quick. There was just one other Kennedy missing the clad layer reported found among those bags, and it sold raw at auction on eBay in May, 2005 for $555. Chris
