I recently notified the seller of the following coin, that his coin was counterfeit: http://cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-Hard-...5QQihZ011QQcategoryZ11976QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He said prove it, and I did, and he did not remove the listing. I reported the item to ebay, and the response I got was (not verbatim of course) We will review the coin, send it to an anti-fraud community group, who will then forward the information to the ANA, who then will review the information, and if deemed counterfeit, will contact the seller the directly. It seems to me, that rather than pull the listing, they would rather send the coin through a painfully long process which will not even be concluded by the time the auction ends, so that they can still collect their money, despite someone getting screwed. Seems very dishonest, and very very intentional to me that they made it such a drawn out process.
I have seen the exact coin up for sale and reported it as well. I watched the coin and when people started to bid I contacted the bidders and let tem know it was fake. I think ebay will take more action when upset bidders start to complain to them. Or maybe not.
That si one of the worst fakes I have ever seen! Hopefully it is so bad people won't bid on it but you never know what people can get sucked into. It doesn't even have a denomination on it!
If you think e-bay cares at all about countefeit coins or the consumer, you are sadly mistaken. They are focused on only one thing -- their bottom line.
I don't have any Draped Bust Dollars in my collection and certainly am no expert on them. Having said that, I have checked the scans of that coin against the pictures in my 2008 Red Book and can't see any difference. The 1799 silver dollar in my book doesn't have a denomination stamped on it either. So what is it about that coin that screams counterfeit?
ebay cares about all of us. They just wan't to make sure we get the best deal ever! ps. replace "cares" with cares less" and replace "get the best deal ever" with ripped off.
check out his web site http://www.silver-coins.org/1796_draped_bust_dollar.html You have to compare ever little detail and you have to have the real coin and the coin in question side by side!!
Thanks! I see it now. The most obvious clue is the stars. The genuine coin should have 8 stars on the left side and seven on the right. That coin on Ebay is short two stars and hence must be a fake.
That's the whole purpose of having the procedure. :headbang: It lets them claim that they are fighting fraud without risking their fees from the fraudster!
To tell you the truth I reported Chinacoin for selling a set of Hutt River Fathers of Baseball Proof set. First I asked the seller about serial numbers and he told me you can't have them on a ribbed rim. I then explained to him they were in the wrong box and labeled wrong. His reply was to threaten to report me for sending spam messages. I know my Hutt River coins even if others don't take a fancy to them. I reported him twice to Ebay. Bad thing is someone is going to pay the $275 he wants for the fake set. Best thing anyone can do is know as much as you can about what you are bidding on and ask questions.
no different than ever...I used to contact sellers and buyers (until they blocked the ability to contact buyers) and I have never had a seller remove the fake (or change the listing as in the case of a person selling a copper coin as gold) or have ebay do anything about it...its just buyer beware...they wore me out. Look out for yourself hey 1991retiredarmy....you wouldnt have a prince leonard portrait coin you would be willing to sell...the new batch they are making arent as nice IMO.
Check the new eBay User Agreement-- I got an e-mail about it over the weekend-- and tell me the answer to the original question again... In fact, I was surprised after my return from a relaxing and completely offline weekend that there wasn't a loooooong thread about said revised user agreement...
I wouldn't put it that way exactly - they are more afraid of being sued for pulling items without just cause than they are of losing a few bucks for a listing.
It looks like the auction has been removed. I cant get the listing to come up anymore. Good job guys!!!
Every once in a while eBay does something right. Not often, but sometimes. zaneman Just curious. I no longer have access to the guy's name. Since you corresponded with him, you must. Is he still active or did he get suspended ?
