Tips on searching VCoins?

I'm interested in getting an ancient coin of "Julius Caesar". (The one that common folk know by that name). So I think I'm specifically looking for "Gaius" (thanks for the help, JZ).

How do I narrow down the search on VCoins?

Searching for "Gaius", sorted by "Relevance", I get 141 items. Many/most of them are not applicable.

(The first one is Gaius Caligula, the 2nd is Augustus, etc.)

I figured out that I could uncheck the option for "Search titles and descriptions". That took it down to 48 items. But still, many are not what I'm looking for.

    Help?

What reverse are you looking for?

Do the advanced search and enter Julius Caesar in the box "this exact phrase." The thing with JC is that you get all of the moneyers that issued coins during his time, but that's better than getting thousands of coins related to the word "Caesar." I don't think parentheses work the way they're supposed to in the regular search - a bug in their engine perhaps.

I don't have a preference at this time. I'm a newbie and just want a JC coin. Once I begin studying them, perhaps I'll prefer some over the others.

    Thanks. That helps.

Now how do I narrow it down? I have it sorted by price, and the cheapest one that I see from the right time period (100 BC - 44 BC, right?)

Is the next step to do a Ctrl-F on the page and search for "Julius"? I see two for $80 and one for $100, and they're all pretty rough-looking.

His coins will be expensive. Lots of demand for Julius Caesar portrait coins. I think even @Alegandron could be tempted.

If you want nice coins, filter for items over $500, lol. Actually, that's not funny. :(

You might be better off looking through Wildwinds on his page. See something you like and then go to Vcoins.

It is a pretty forgiving search engine, but you do pick up a lot of what are in the descriptions. Try "julius caesar elephant" for example.

Turning off the filter that also searches the description will help in this case since any coin of his will have the name but many others will have those words only in the description. This is also a case you might find it easier to have results displayed with most expensive first. You might not want the $21k coin but you can see it as you scroll down to where the coins get too ugly for you to want.

Unless i'm missing something here, simply enter the name Julius Caesar in the vcoins search field with "title only" checked. In my test, it retrieves 101 results, virtually all relevant. It's not as though there are so many coins of Julius Caesar available on vcoins that multiple filters are necessary.

LOL...but he DID destroy the Republic! (And, yes I DO have a JC Elephant with pontifex accoutrements...) :p

I'm going to start a thread about examples of "threats to the Republic" and I suppose that would be a good place for him.;)
