Most of the suggestions would be made depending on what you like to collect or have an interest in. There are many wonderful subject-specific books out there. Where do your interests lie?

Instead of buying a few books and spending the same amount. Get
(THE BOOK on US coins) .. Breen's Comlete Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Coins. it'll cost you about $100.00 or a little less but will give you all the info on US Coins that you could want. This is one of the first (serious books) I bought and I refer to it very frequently. Highly Recommended.

The most important decision in a particular book is in your interests. Be specific. There are books on every U.S. series. Some are more in depth than others.
Some such as Breen are very generic, but do offer many good details. The Red Book is also a wonderful general referrence book.

    Hello, Ferrarii. :)

I always suggest that new collectors get the Red Book (which you already have), and the "Official A.N.A. Grading Standards for United States Coins".

Those books are the two most important references a collector of US coinage can have, IMO.

You should be able to find a used eddition of "Grading Standards" for a few dollars. Unused copies are about $15.

The more advanced you get in this hobby - the more you discover how much there is you want & need to know. You will also soon discover that there is no ONE book - for any subject. Every coin, every denomination, every series of every denomination - has had many, many books written about it. And to really know your subject - you need them all.

The first "printed" book about coins was written in 1511 ( here I go using my memory again  ) - and since then it has never stopped. And almost without exception - these books contain errors and misinformation. Which is why no single book will suffice for the advanced collector. To such a collector - his library is often more important than the coins themselves. And the books are often much harder to find and just as expensive as the coins - often more so. I have spent months searching the entire world to find a copy of a specific book - many I have still not found. But the search for knowledge continues ;)

If memory serves, that's the second time I've ever heard that particular book referred to in a forum posting. In other words, for world coins the basic reference is Krause! :D

Remember, Krause is probably available at your local public library. :)

Hi Farrarii, There are a few Barber books out there.
The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters
Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage
    Complete guide to Barber Dimes

Might be a few more, I hope to pick up a few of these myself.
I don't really know about the late coinage books though
