53...collecting on-and-off bullion (15 years) and numismatics (5) depending on my job situation.

33, I had some random collections as a kid and then rediscovered the hobby a few years ago.

I'm going to create a separate thread but with a poll on bullion, numismatics, or both.

54, Born and raised in a small farming community. Knew everyone for many miles around and other than my dad who pulled coins from change, only to spend most when times were tough, the only other person I knew who collected was the paper man, who gave me my first Peace Dollar.

My great grandparents owned a small grocery till they passed and I worked there some as a child. I got paid change and would ask for the silver ones because that's what my dad collected.

When 15, I went to work in the big grocery store in town. Though it was late 70's, there was still alot of silver floating around. I would get all I could, but gave half my pay to my parents and I was a teenager in love with every girl in town, so that took most all of the rest.

Marriage, college, and kids, put a hold on any kind of collecting, other than bills, the negative kind. After a divorce and move in 2003, I got my childhood trunk in the move, I found my peanut cans full of silver in the bottom. With the advent of the internet, and more time on my hands, I started researching what I had. Have since added alot to it.

Speaking of paperboys, every other collector I know above age 60, got into numismatics delivering newspapers and pulling nice Franklins and other silver from the customers who paid them

Ever hear of Hugh "Bones" Taylor? Google the name. He was my history teacher, football coach, and believe it or not, paper man.

I'm 23 and have been collecting since I was about 14 with a 4 year break during college. I'm happy to see so many young people in addition to the older "young folks" :D I wonder how many of the young collectors started with the state quarters.

I'll be 30 next month and have been collecting on and off since I was 8 or so. Just got back into collecting on a regular basis a few years ago.

Actually I find the number under 40 to be encouraging for the hobby. Uninformed people are always saying that it's nothing but "old fogies" like me.:woot:
