With all the awesome posts, in combination, we could easily pull together an outstanding collection!! I am running out of examples to post as my Roman collection is somewhat small in comparison to most of the collectors here: Roman Imperial: Licinius I (308-324) Æ follis, Cyzicus (RIC VII-9) Obv: IMP LICI-NIVS AVG; laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding mappa and scepter. Rev: IOVI CONS-ERVATORI AVCC; Jupiter standing facing, head left, holding Victory on globe and sceptre; in left field, wreath; in right field, E; SMK in exergue.
Of LRB's the smallest coins with Victory are the "Two-Victories" types. If you hunt through many, many coins, you occasionally come across some with fully-struck reverses. It's a lot of device for a small coin. Two from Constans...
Of my Victories, I believe this Julia Domna of Emesa is the most rare. The specimen in the French National Collection in Paris was known to Cohen (C. 250) so it gets listed in later works that copy him. RIC lists it as a hybrid with reverse of Pescennius Niger but they do not list the type for either Niger or Septimius so calling the only known coin a hybrid seems a bit odd. I'm waiting for Martin to find another but until then I'll call it one of two known. I bought a 34 coin bulk lot on eBay to get it. I would love to see the Paris coin. The BNF website has many photos of Greek Imperial coins of Julia Domna but I am unable to find a link to anything Roman (in this case a denarius of the Emesa, Syria, mint. If any of you are in France and could guide me through their website to find an image of this coin, I would be most appreciative. Julia Domna, AR denarius Emesa mint IVLIADO MNAAVG VICTOR IV ST AVG Victory seated left Cohen 250 The Cohen listing lacks the G on AVG on the reverse but my coin shows it weakly almost touching the groundline. I assume their coin is missing this area.
I have one coin with victory on the reverse. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. AR Quinarius, Brundisium or Roma 29-27 BC, AR 1.63 g. Obv: CAESAR IMP VII, Bare head Rev: ASIA RECEPTA Victory standing l. on cista mistica, holding wreath and palm branch; on either side, snake. BMC 647. RIC 276. CBN 900
A couple of different depictions. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:– VICTORIA, Victory standing left engraving AV/G on shield to left with right hand, which is resting on a column, holding palm in left hand. Centre dot. Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194-195 Reference:– BMCRE 402, thought to be SE V, CO and AV/VG but from same die pair as this coin. RIC 430 (Rated R citing BM). RSC 703a. All the coins cite the BM example which is unclear. This example, whilst suffering from the harsh cleaning method (zapped?) is sufficiently clear to make out the correct COS II obverse legend and the AV/G on the shield. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:- L SEPT SEVER P-ERT AVG IMP VII-I, Laureate head right Rev:- VICTOR AVG, Victoria standing right, left foot on globe?, holding shield with left hand, resting on knee, inscribing with right hand Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. Reference:– RIC 486 var. BMCRE pg. 113 var. Cohen 704 var.
