I need help. I have Four namco arcade tokens, and i don't Know anything about them. i was wondering if anybody could help me. they are gold colored, and in big letters say NAMCO. There is a picture of pacman, and in tiny letters, it says it is from 1991. At the bottom it says "Amusement to Entertainment. on the back, it has three balloons and confetti. on the top of the back, it says " Entertainment for the Whole Family". And on the bottom, it says "Your Ultimate Party Headquarters". P.S. i can not post pictures now, because i do not have a scanner that i can use at the time, sorry.
Namco is a Japanese video game company although it's under Bandai. Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namco Most likely used for arcade.
thanks gxseries, but i need to know what it is, not what itis used for, (i know it is an arcade token).
I really don't know, but if it's anything like the arcade tokens I remember, it's probably some sort of manganese alloy.
What my young apprentice has failed to convey is that he has been given a challenge to write an article for the NENA Newsletter about them. He needs to find out about their manufactur, use, value, varieties, etc. Richard
allow me to specify what i need, e.g. roughly how many did namco produce each year? how much did ten cost back then? how much would ten cost now? ect. ect. and if you know absolutely nothing, at least send me a link to where you would go to find out.
Information about these is rare as hen's teeth, because few people really collect them. I do know that you would get four of those for a dollar at the arcade.
Here's a website for arcade token collectors. You might ask there for your answers. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videogametokens/
I believe they are brass. At least back to the 1980s they are $0.25. When you put a dollar into the coin machine, you get four of them. The same holds true today. I saw on TV that the game machines go by size, unlike standard vending machines, which go by weight and metal composition. Some arcades have done away with them and accepted actual quarters into the machines, some take tokens, and rarely you will find an arcade that accepts both. I collect video game arcade tokens, I especially enjoy getting them by playing the arcade itself...I've beaten many a side scroller in my time You can see the Namco token in my collection in the middle of the top row here. Sorry the picture is really, really lousy... The one that is reflected over is from my local arcade, maybe two minutes from home.
thanks, Billy Kingsley, that is the exact coin i have, i think, but to be sure it isn't a different one, can you send me a picture of the back? :loud:-WE WANT PICTURES!!!!!
I collect amusement tokens also, but my ref. book on the topic is from 1984 and does not list a NAMCO. It did list a N.Am.Co token in the older unidentified section, but that is not the same token as in the pic above. Sorry I could not be of help.
I believe some carnivals/malls/state&county fairs had arcades and would give you 4/$1.... I remember these as a kid, and the local pizza shops had arcades in them, heck, even pizza hut use to have a few video games back then... Not sure why the pizza joints stopped doing this
The only thing that you haven't been told is in additions to the machines they would also supply the tokens to arcade operators if they wanted you will find some that have assorted arcade names on one side. Or sometimes generic sayings related to the entertainment industry. Made of a brass alloy, mostly for the same reason that door knobs use to be brass. Brass has germ killing or limiting qualities.
