I know PCGS certs them as satin, how about the other TGG's? I think it will add to their value and the value of nonsatin coins if they are recognized as a seperate and distinct issue. Any thoughts?
I have the "update page" for my Dansco 8113 Jefferson nickel album, and it does not have seperate holes for Mint issued "Satin Finish" and regular issued "circulation" strikes. I am using the "Satin Finish" coins to fill those holes, but I believe that's something that has to be left up to the individual collector.
Good question. I've often wondered why they decided that the 1979-S deserved two holes (VAR I and VAR II), while there is only one hole for every other date/mintmark.
Satin coins I don't mean to highjack the thread, but what exactly are 'satin finish' coins and where do you get them? I have never seen them offered on the Mint websight. Thanks. David.
2005, 2006, and 2007 mint sets (and probably those in the future) have a distinct finish that is (in my opinion) a different issue from business strike coins. You will find them in any mint set from those years, take a look at one of those sets and you will probably agree that they are different enough to be considered a seperate issue.
I think that Dansco WILL offer albums with and without the satin finish coins in the future. You have to realize that these manufatures don't normally cange their production setting for the albums every year. They will produce an album that runs through the current date and maybe even have holes labeled for the next one or two years. (This is why you can find old ones that list 1965-D, 1966-D, and even 1967-D coins. It's why the 2007 Redbook lists silver President dollars. They took and educated guess at what WOULD be produced in the near future and printed accordingly.) Plus possibly have some unlabeled holes. If they do that they don't have to change their set up for two or three years, and just do print runs as needed. The satin finish coins are only coming up on their third year. It would not surprise me if we see the first album that lists them either this year or next.
Let me get this straight... Ok. great another variety. But from a practical point of view - are we in the 1982-1983 scenario where there are no "regular" uncirculated coins being distributed by the mint? In other words, since 2005, if we want "regular" non-satin uncirculated coins, we need to be getting in line at the bank and get the rolls as they come from the mint? That might explain why I see all those darned rolls of 2005 and 2006 coins on e-bay....... Is this true?
I started a thread a year or so ago, trying to solicit opinions regarding the value of regular rolls from companies like String, etc., which are of course NOT satin finish ones, therefore quite different from coins in U.S. Mint Sets. My opinion is that we should probably obtain some of each of the non-satin finish coins just because they ARE DIFFERENT, and MIGHT have album spaces for them in the future! Opinions of other Coin Talk members at the time of my thread, were varied on the issue, but most felt it would be a good idea to collect both types of finish. As for album spaces, I have yet to find any that accomodate both finishes, as the spaces are simply labeled "2005 P,D, and S" without distinction for finish.
