In my opinion this is a highly suspect drachm, Antigonas Monophthalmos of Lampsakos mint, theoretically, but the surfaces have that casting sort of irregularity, particularly on the reverse. Also, the reverse seems to be a match to this pressed cast of the the Dmitrovgrad School. Also, it's light at 3.8g. That wouldn't be cause for concern in and of itself, because I've seen authentic coins with weights that low, but it certainly doesn't add to this coin's case. Thoughts?
Yeah, I have no doubts myself. I just wanted to share it. This comes from a well-known and well-respected dealer that we've probably all bought from, which just goes to show that forgeries can slip through the cracks, even among the best.
Been seeing some very nice fakes lately, not sure bout this one leaning fake, but to someone that doesn't know might be a problem. its has some very good details, but no flow lines. it won't be long and you won't know for sure.
Looks fake-a-doodle-doo to me, too. I can't really speak to the design, but the surfaces are definitely off. Since you're asking and not telling us it's fake, I'm assuming there's no sign of a seam or casting sprue?
Not to mention the sand grains in the fields from the casting mold. Here's an extreme example of cast sand grains taken from a random pic from the internet:
The link you posted goes to the wrong coin (a Tiberius denarius). I'm interested in seeing the matching known fake.
This is why I buy graded. I am not good enough to spot that as a fake. I would hope the second eyes at NGC would at least weed out the ones that yall could spot.
The obverse is a fairly good copy, but the reverse style is completely off. Add to that the clear casting bubbles all over it, well, should be obvious but sometimes these get past some of us.
I recently I had a close call, with one of my coins being a potential fake, although procured from a very knowledgeable person. Coins of this style seem relatively easy to fake. I have found pretty close fakes but lucky it remains authentic. 16.58 grams Very close to http://thracecoins.reidgold.com/forgery.html "Faker #3"
I don't know if those were pimples or just coloration, but the section of flan edge between green arrows looked rather fresh.
