Greetings everyone. I recently put this up on eBay and had a bunch of people message me about it. A lot of people asked for the weight. My scale only measures in ounces. Upon weighing it comes out to 1.1 Oz. Which would be about 31 grams. According to NGC this coin should weigh 65 grams. I ended the listing because I believe I should have it probably looked at to confirm it's authenticity. I notified some of the watchers and they still offered me money for it ,more than what I was asking. Can anyone even tell me what is so special about this coin and what it may actually be worth? Also is it in fact a 10 KOPEK?

    THANKS

These are 5 Kopecks and weigh from 38-61grams each (they vary widely) I haven't seen a 10 kopeck before but it certainly has the look... one question i will ask what does the side/edge look like... 5 kopecks have a reversed knerlled pattern, not sure what a 10 should have....
PS that piece is in fantastic condition.. not surprised to hear collectors making good offers for it..

I'm not well versed in Russian coinage, but I've seen plenty for sale and this is easily one of the nicest I've seen.

As mentioned, it's Siberian (not Serbian).

Here is my Siberian 10-kopeck piece, which cost me $240.00.

Russia (Siberia): copper 10-kopecks of Catherine the Great, 1781-KM, Suzun mint

Yours is so exceptionally sharp in terms of strike and planchet quality- a little "too good to be true", even- that I believe it is actually a novodel (sort of like a restrike). Now, I do not know much about novodels, or how their value compares to that of an original circulating issue like mine, but they do have value in their own right. So the fact that yours is likely a novodel rather than an original is not necessarily bad news. It is still quite collectable.

Here's a CoinTalk thread with a little discussion about them.

Agreed. It appears to be a Novodel. Some of these are worth as much as an original. Still very collectible.

Interesting...so in other terms it is not authentic?
My coin has grooves or a reeded edge to it.
I had someone offer me $1,600 for it. I do think I should have it graded though.

I don't know what your situation is but I would have taken that offer.

I wanted to... But I have an eBay business and they frown on people selling things that aren't authentic. For all I know I could have sold it to him and he could turn around telling eBay it's not a real coin and then swap it out or something. With coins like this I suppose it's best to be graded. That's what I'm going to do here.

Also...is that what a Novodel is? Like a reproduction? Not an actual coin? I am not sure I would even be able to sell that on eBay.

From my understanding a Novodel is a kind of authorized re-strike. They are made at a later date than what is on the coin but by the mint. They are very collectible.

I understand what you mean. The only coins I sell on eBay are graded. You are taking a chance sending it to get graded. NGC will grade is as a Novodel. If it comes back as not authentic that would mean that they don't think it is an original or Novodel. At that point it is worth nothing.

Like a reproduction, but an official (or at least quasi-official) reproduction, authorized by the governing authority, I believe, rather than by just any random party.

As mentioned, I don’t know much about novodels, but they still have value in their own right. @Chris B mentioned that some can be worth as much as an original. So it’s not a situation like you would have with a worthless replica. It’s still a collectible and potentially valuable item.

But what that value happens to be, I couldn’t say.

There are novodels for sale on eBay, and some are in PCGS and NGC slabs.
