I've looked at this under a few different light sources I see what appears to be another d nw of the normal d. I dont see anything listed for a 50 d rpm so it may just be my eyes. PMD or a true rpm? 1950dd1.jpg 1950dd3.jpg 1950dd4.jpg 1950dd5.jpg 1950dd6.jpg

I do not believe I see what you're describing.

I don't think it is an RPM. The thing about copper is that it can be moved around with relative ease. It's possible that it took a slight hit (long ago), but without a very close examination, it's hard for me to tell.

I'm with Chris. It looks like it took a hit a long time ago and circulated for years afterwards.

I think I see peeling. Do you see any copper peeling up under that 9? If so, it could be some type of lamination.

I say Chris and collecting nut is right about the hit but for the life of me it looks like another D. I'm going to take it to a local coin dealer he has a set up where he can enlarge the coin and uses a halogen light see if he thinks a hit too. I see there are other 50 D rpm but none to the nw so it would be awesome if this was a new one but not getting my hopes up :)

Let us know what the dealer says.

What we have here is another example of pareidolia. Just as we sometimes see faces in the clouds, or Jesus/Muhammad/Buddha/Jerry Garcia hanging out on our morning toast; essentially, you're brain is convincing you to see something that isn't really there.

The coin, unfortunately, displays only damage that remotely resembles a slightly smaller secondary "D". With that said though, If you wish to take it to a dealer, please do understand that most are not that knowledgeable regarding varieties. Unfortunately, "dealer" and "expert" are far from synonymous.

Unfortunately I'll never know what he would say about it because I found out he passed a couple days ago due to complications of cancer :( . I didn't even know he had cancer but he wasn't the kind to complain or talk about personal stuff. I'll just hold onto it for now and when I go to the next coin show I'll ask around and have them show me other rpm so I can see in hand what one looks like.

    My sympathies...

There are many RPMs for this date and mark, so a simple comparison isn't going to be of any real use unfortunately. Wexler lists details for six "best of" for this date/mint (below), but his online listings are incomplete. Coppercoins shows 13 different, and CONECA seven if I recall correctly, but none will match your coin. For the sake of comparison and familiarizing yourself with genuine RPMs, you don't necessarily have to use this date, and certainly can learn a lot simply be spending some quality time in the aforementioned websites.

Here is the link to the Coneca site. They have ebooks for RPM's, and doubled die's. A great way to familiarize yourself with what you may encounter.
