@Omegaraptor Whether you give it a try or not is up to you! You might start by rummaging through the PCGS Registry for those people who have an uncompleted set and see if they are interested in selling. Chris
Get the nicest coins you can afford. I wouldn't bother which company certified them or what the label says ;-)
Yeah that 16 D in a pcgs ms 67 CAC only $195,500.00. See February Coin World on collecting Mercury dimes.
I'd start with the FB "Short Set" (1940 - 1945): http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/alltimeset.aspx?s=77980 Maybe-You-Already-Know: Later this year, the U.S. Mint will produce a 1/10 oz gold coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Mercury Dime: http://catalog.usmint.gov/mercury-dime-2016-centennial-gold-coin-16XB.html
Can't really afford FB, but might be able to get it on a few dates. The set I plan on assembling seems like it'll be 1934-45, mostly in 64-66 PCGS/NGC.
If you skip 42/1 and 42/1 D, that should be a doable set. If you want to add some challenge (and probably also expense), go for nice toners. Mercury toners are somewhat uncommon; nice ones are scarce.
Fun set. I did the short set first and worked backwards from there. With the early years I had to lower my sites a bit to EF or AU. Never cared to buy the 16D. Too much money for something that would match the set.
If you are planning on completing the short set, you should definitely spend the extra money and buy FB examples. It is extremely difficult to sell non FB examples for the later dates due to their availability and affordability in FB.
Try Mexican Cap and Rays in MS63 and MS65 ... LOL. Buy something that is JUST starting out ... Spanish/American Colonials ...
Go for it! For the 40-45 short set, I recommend buying PQ 66FBs when you can, ideally not in the latest generation holders. Best value for the money imho. Also, for the 45 aim for a 67 that has nice lettering and hair since you aren't going to buy a fb . . . .
Do you want to try it? If the answer to that question is yes then you should go for whatever coin will make you happy
