I have come across listings for this coin, but no explanation of it. To my eye, the mint mark looks like an ordinary S. Can someone explain it?

Well the first mm went in sideways, and the second was punched over the top of it, the first horizontal is rotated to about the 2 o'clock position and the top loop of the s is visible on the right hand side of the correct S

    dreamer,

I have included the link below to pics and info on Copper Coins website! It is easier to include the link than it is to explain the Variety!

I just sold a beautiful AU-55 EDS example of the RPM# 2 and have two more, one in VF-30 and the other in VF-20. I also have a nice AU-58 RPM# 1 which I think is more rare than the RPM# 2!

That pretty much sums it up. It's actually a very tough coin, and I think the price guides are a little low on it. I have seen several go above Trends. Yesterday, an AU-55 example of one sold for $595 at an auction I attended. I felt that was strong money for the coin, but it is a tough piece.

I actually bought a 09-s on ebay in 2000, in 06 I bought the Lincoln cent encyclopedia by anderson and lo and behold it turned out to be an s over hor s

Here's a few pics of a 1909 S/S that I purchased on ebay just last month. Magnification is needed to see the error. I paid $80.05 including shipping. What do you folks think this coin grades and was that a fair price?

Nice coin, and you managed to steal it at that price.

Were you wearing a ski mask when you bought that bad boy, cause you done robbed them blind. That is easily a VF, worth about $180-190. Well played for a measly 80 bucks.

Yes, I got a good deal but not quite as good as you describe. This thread is two years old and at that time 1909s/s Lincoln Cents weren't quite as expensive as they are now.
