I know that it is a really tiny segment of the market, a small niche hidden away in the corner of Africa. But, I'm a big fan of Moroccan coinage. There have been some really nice examples on Heritage over the past couple of months, and I've bid many times the estimate - and been blown out of the water on most of it. Moroccan coinage is HOT right now! Anyways, picked up this gorgeous piece on the Bay. Guess the grade! Also, feel free to post any Moroccan coinage you might have.
Yeah, that one sold at NYINC earlier this month. I bid on it, and bid very strongly. It just kept going up and up.... Pre-auction estimate was $1300-$1500. I figured that was a high estimate. I started my bidding at $1000. I chased it to $2000. It sold for $2800....
The 1299 10 Dirhams was graded MS-65. You can see the auction here: http://coins.ha.com/itm/morocco/mou...3044-30446.s?ic2=mybidspage-lotlinks-12202013 My coin is a 1/2 Rial, by the way. That is the equivalent of 5 dirhams, about the size of a US half dollar. The 10 dirhams in the post above is about the size of a Morgan.
Jason, based on the pre-auction estimate and the hammer price, would you say that the difference between a Moroccan coin and a "Moron" coin is just three letters (cca)? Chris
No. I'd say it's the finest graded example, and in hand I'm guessing the luster is dripping and the color is bold and beautiful. I'm guessing there were a couple of collectors who really wanted it, and bid it up until one quit. I wouldn't say this was a moron price - its just really strong.
High end Moroccan coins have been hot for the better part of a decade. I also love the designs a lot, but I don't own any superb examples as of yet, only the more readily affordable and more average ones.
My coin, by the way, is graded 66. @Numismat , do you have pics of any of yours? I'm slowly picking up pieces when I see them. I really like the French Colonial period the best. You can see a few of them here: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=174640
