    that's awesome!

unless the coins on snapchat or vine, i'm not going to be able to get my kids to look at for more than 2 seconds...let alone 2 hours.

    lets see the winning coin!

Awesome. Coins are a good way to bring family together AND preserve the hobby.

There are collectors on social media that post photos and information about coins. Perhaps persuade your kids to follow some of them.

Someone also posted a website here the other day (don't remember which thread it was) with coin related puzzles and games for kids to play. Have your kids try it.

Ah - now we know how you clean your coins. Children in a sweat shop. :p

    Wonderful photo!!!

It seems that in my remaining family, I'm down to my nephew and possibly his grade-school kids who share any interest at all of coins, ancient or modern----hopefully, my 'coin gifts' will nurture and enhance that flickering interest.

I'd love to hear what reactions your kids had once they cleaned and identified a coin and began to truly realize the age and history of each one.

I got my little bro interested in coins for a time, but despite my best efforts he lost that interest unfortunately.

Good to see a success story.

Cool family photo, YOC ... thanks for shring that with us (very pleasant)

I knew a few would zoom in for clues. ... no clues on that table sadly. Cocktail sticks and cotton wool buds are the only tools on view.

My daughter is not too interested in the history..yet! But she loves the cleaning and is more thorough than her little brother.
He, on the other hand loves both the cleaning and the history. He can identify some mint marks and emperor profiles. We metal detect together, so he is lucky enough to find his own roman , saxon and medieval coins when we go out.
Some of our best coin finds for the year are at the museum at the moment for recording, but when we get them back I'll start a he thread with them.

Here are the 4 coins they cleaned... from scratch.
Georges are on the left, and Emilys' on the right.
    They are both winners!
Pictures are rubbish, taken with iphone.
Coins really much better than they look here.

They look like exceptional examples, ESPECIALLY for previously 'uncleaned' coins..
and both did a great job on them!!

Hmmm, did I miss what you 'rewarded' them with for a 'job well done' ?? That might come in handy as an added incentive for my nephews kids....After all, my collection has to end up somewhere, probably to him, his wife and his two daughters and son.

Seen the oranges on the table? (Job well done)
Seen the fish food? (Job not so well done)

Where do you get such great uncleaned coins? Or did you take some nicer coins and stick them in the mud for a bit?

No , these were genuine covered in hard copper oxides and cement like mud. Bought through some contacts in the UK a few weeks ago.
