@dchjr @Insider @Rick Stachowski I've seen similar anomalies on Morgan dollars (I think). Maybe John @messydesk can shed some light on it. (Pun intended) Chris
I think its MD based on all the pics. Look at the center bar of the E. really a tough call here, the photos are all over the place with shadows, lighting etc.. One picture I look at it and it looks like I see what everyone is talking about, the next picture looks like classic MD. Then there is the S that "looks" like the lower serif is split but isnt in hand. Who knows. I will See Potter tomorrow morning and see what he thinks but I am betting that he will come to the same conclusion
The biggest problem is that the photos are not consistent. Some have too much lighting and some are taken at angles. The photos should be taken from directly overhead, and if the anomaly doesn't show up, you need to rotate the coin in the light until it does. Once you capture the image, then you can use your photo software to rotate the image to an upright position. Chris
Only thing I've seen like it (and really not the same at all) is the bulge on the "T" on some IHC. My example does not have the doubling that is on the "E" here. I sent the OP Ken's correct Email.
I've seen almost the same thing on the legend of a Morgan $. A remnant of the letter positioned on top in the same place. I just can't remember which coin and whether it was one I had or a photo from VAMWorld. Chris
Took photos with me to the show today and Potter came to the same conclusion as I did.. His first response was look at that S.. what year is this coin... I told him the OP said its the lighting. Then he looked at the E and said well, the lighting could be playing with this as well.. I would say based on these photos and what your (Me in this case) have told him about this thread, its MD.
Not sure if Ken is accepting any coins ... Mr. Wiles or Mr. Ellis, but first send them an email and ask if it's ok to send it ( coin ) ...............
