Thanks for the info on MD. Unfortunately, it looks like the OP's coin has a shelf (like MD) and a normal surface (like a normal coin or MD) AND A RASED SURFACE ON TOP OF THE NORMAL SURFACE. Hummmmm. Very interesting and a stumper to me w/o seeing the actual coin under a stereo scope. @dchjr, is there any MD on the coin? In one photo the "S" seems to have a notch like a dbl die. Photos can play tricks. Anyway, send photos to Ken Potter. He will probably write his opinion in CW.
I don't see any indication of any other MD on the coin. Also, I think the "S" was just how the picture was. I don't see it under a loop.
That's what I thought because the "S" looked normal in other pics. I hate to be stumped We'll all learn something from this coin. IMO, it is too perfect to be damage and ejection doubling does not leave a raised area on a coin along with a shelf.
Don't think the engravers would need to "touch up" one part of a letter either; yet something had to make the die recess extend below the normal base of the rest of the "E." Hope you decide to send it to an expert.
I thought that too AT FIRST. But I think it is part of the (?) rather than a break. EXCEPT, if the die did break there, it would sink and cause the raised part we see. I think you have the best answer so far! I have given the OP Ken Potters Email so he can send photos to him.
I just left Ken a couple of hours ago and will see him again tomorrow at the coin show, along with the rest of the Michigan Coneca gang ...
Anyone looking at the split on the lower portion of the S? Or is that lighting playing tricks on my tired old eyes.
Well, the email address was rejected. If someone can pass it along to him, that would be great. Thanks.
