Ok, yes, I am an ardent fan of the Roman Republican, and focus my collection on their Histories. However, I am quietly collecting the Roman Empire coins also. I have but 20 slots to fill in my Roman Empire Album, and these last 20 are going to be more of a challenge to complete. Since I am a true adherent to the Republic and its wonderful history; once I complete the Album, I plan to give it to my Grandkids so that the next generation can appreciate Ancients. I normally do not post Empire coinage, but this one struck me as a cool coin to share. Mission accomplished: Maximus slot filled... NEXT... And,...I don't think that I have seen a Maximus in the recent postings... Roman Empire Maximus 235-238 CE AE Sestertius Rome mint (236-238 CE) 28mm, 19.5g OBV: C IVL VERVS MAXIMUS CAES, Draped bust r. REV: PIETAS AVG S-C, priestly emblems REF: RIC 6 Co. 5 (Gosh, I am so used to the TINY AR Sestertii of the Republic, the size of the bronze Sestertius is just corrupt!)
Nice! I have one I've posted in the past, but here it is again. MAXIMUS AE Sestertius OBVERSE: MAXIMVS CAES GERM - Bare-headed, draped bust right REVERSE: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS - Maximus standing left, holding baton and spear, two standards behind Struck at Rome, 236-238 AD 18.3g, 28.5mm RIC 9, C 14
Very nice choice! I always like the priestly implements designs, whatever the emperor or variety. They must look great in hand on a sestertius. If anyone's really bored they can look up lituus, secespita, patera, guttus, simpulum, and aspergillum.
I love the bold, blocky inscriptions on provincials from Tomis. They were not shy about putting letters on their coins. Even very worn examples have significant remaining legends. I've also noticed that sometime during the Severan Dynasty, the curved C sigmas got angular. This is really a great coin on many levels.
IF I had to collect just one Provincial city, Tomis would be one I would consider. Fortunately I am not cut out to be a specialist.
that's a nice sestertius aleg, with wear but still very attractive (an probably affordable...just what i like) a coin with the implements like that is on my list! i do have an AS of this fellow...but photobucket is down right now so i can't post it. you're not missing much, its kind of a turd.
Wow Alegandalf => that's a fantastic Maximus OP-addition ... congrats!! Yah, sadly I don't own this coin (shown below) ... but I did place a bid on it during last week's CNG auction (I ended-up sniping those other two examples, so this slightly corroded sweetie slipped through the cracks ... there is only enough coin-cash in the ol' wallet) ... but man, I still think that the reverse is sooooooooo fricken cool (congrats to the dude that ended-up scoring it in the auction .... it's a very cool coin ... I will regret missing this baby for quite some time ... *sigh*) https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=304328
Wow! I see why it sold for 3x estimate (whatever that really means). I agree, I REALLY like the reverse... way cool!
WoW i like the words 'once I complete the Album, I plan to give it to my Grandkids so that the next generation can appreciate Ancients. '
Thank you. I got the Littleton Album from friends on CT last Spring. I was focused on Roman Republican issues, but wanted to have an album that I could house the few Emperor coins I had. The collection grew from there... I am not a fan of Emperors, so I thought that the Album would be a great way to get my Grandkids interested in History and Ancients...
