My initial impression was MS62, but after closer inspection the coin looks to have some very light friction. I'm going with AU58.
These are hard to judge in photos because of the weak strikes. Lots of chatter on the devices and fields on the obverse. I see hairlines in both obverse fields too. Can't tell exactly what they might be. From the pictures I believe this coin to in the AU category.
I seems that we all probably agree that "nice" AU coins are bumped up to MS because of their eye appeal and commercial value. That may actually be the case here if the coin is graded MS (and I still think it is BECAUSE the tiny amount of rub that may be on this coin is insignificant IMO)
I agree that some nice AU's get the bump, but for this coin, if I were the grader, I would not do it. IMO, there is simply too much chatter that along with the slight rub, leads me to believe it saw some brief circulation.
I applaud your first statement. "I bought this one because I liked the patina, and it seemed like a nice example." That is a great way to purchase coins. If you like` it then, why sell it? It's almost impossible to grade a coin just from an image, which is why grading services must see it in the "flesh." The other reason is they want your money. Every time it's sent in, they make money. Don't crack till you are certain of your decision. Or, enjoy it for what it is, a really cool coin. On the other hand, there are a lot of most excellent bargains out there as really nice dollars are selling for a much less than they used to. No one knows how many times this coin has been submitted. My philosophy? This is my hobby, I do it for fun. Enjoy.
So I'm throwing my guess in - that it's an AU58, it is gorgeous - but there is fading and wear marks around the date (or a poor strike, but that doesn't seem correct since the rest is very strong). There is also what appears to be rubbing along the eagle's shoulder. There is also a lot of chaff on the chin, possibly bag marks, but looks more like circulation scrapes. Second to last - there's very visible lines in the fields. Not sure if they are die polish or if they are cleaning / scratches on the coin. Coin in hand is always best - but the pictures are far nicer than I've ever been able to generate. Someday I'm going to put up an offer of a beer or three for some one-on-one training - once I get a decent camera rig. Very last, I must downplay the coin to make sure the price stays low until I get a chance to buy it. (kidding!)
Thanks for all the guesses and comments. The assigned grade is.... AU58! Some of you have very sharp eyes for spotting rub! I have a hard time doing that from photos. If you tilt the coin under a point source light (halogen, LED) the high point rub shows up as gray metal. It's very apparent on the bust, and there is a bit of rub in the left obv. field. On the rev, the only rub I can clearly see is on the eagle's shoulder. When I look at the fields with my spiffy new Eschenbach loupe, I can see that the lines behind Liberty's head are mostly die polish. Why is there more rub on the obv than the rev? I suspect the coin was in an album for a time, and people would rub a finger or thumb over the portrait. It does not appear to have been dipped, has a better than average strike, and I look forward to having this coin for a while. Purchased from Typecoin on ebay as a B.O. Great service from this seller.
Whoo hoo! I win the coin!!! (sits...waits....checks mailbox...waits some more..) The obverse on that one is VERY pretty and really brings out the high relief design. Cheers to you, and for letting us know a day early (waiting until Saturday would have driven us all insane!)
Aaah no biggie Green.....if this was a classic commem I would hafta heckle you a bit though.... Now where's Insider? I've got a helping of crow coming out of the oven
You guys beat me to it but my call was 58. Too much rub for a ms grade. And the marks feel more to me like circulation marks than bag marks. Also the loss of luster. 21 peace dollars tough to grade. This one very well struck too. I almost went 55 and on another look decided 58
