Sorry for the late bump! Have been out of the country for a while, but just wanted to share the awesome stuff my SS sent me. I'm not always a fan of private medals, as the artwork can often be lacking, but the portrait of this Indian chief is really well-done. It's a great-looking piece of copper. A neat WWII emergency note from the Philippines. A 1920 notgeld note from Austria. From what I understand, these were private tokens issued by municipalities and companies during a period of significant coin hoarding between the two World Wars (similar to Civil War tokens in the U.S.). And some assorted world coins and small silver rounds. A great haul overall - thanks Santa!
It's referred to as a guerilla note. They were printed by a local, province or government as part of the Japanese resistance. Japanese war currency was near worthless. I read somewhere that at the time these were used, an egg would cost you 75 Japanese Pesos.
I wanted to add, the people of the Philippines, up until this time, were using the U.S. government silver standard, the Japanese currency was a fiat currency, which had absolutely nothing backing it. You can see why it was worthless and didn't get.much circulation.
I remember when I first found a Philipino cent with the big US shield...I thought I had found something strange and rare.
I guess enough time has passed. it's official that my SS is not Santa at all. I got scrooged. Anyone else not receive a SS gift? Kirk - make sure my SS is not on next years list. Or any list for that matter. I doubt this person can be removed from this board - but can this person be publicly shamed?
Is it possible it got lost in the mail? Your santa might have been thinking you were very ungrateful for your gift. Hopefully they can figure out what happened.
It is possible that it got lost. Kirk is aware of this. He tried contacting my SS to no avail. Apparently it is someone who has been involved in SS in previous years. Fishy. I don't mind not getting something - that's not why I SS. I like the giving part. It's unfortunate that someone would ask to participate - and then not give. To let it go is wrong too. Sorry to add this negative to an otherwise very positive thread. You guys are amazing with your gifts. Big Hearts here.
Odd. I know I have sold a god coin before on ebay, and got it back months later in the mail with something like "No one came to sign for it." I never heard from the buyer again. It is possible they are ill or worse.
