Greetings! I've missed you guys. Thankfully after a what's been a very challenging and rough week suffering from pneumonia, I feel well enough and strong enough to rejoin this wonderful community. I thought a cheerful little coin might be just what I need having come through from such a bad illness, so I picked this one up. You may remember it from auction#23. BLACK SEA, Apollonia Pontika. AR drachm, 2.9g, 15mm, 12h; Mid to late 4th Century BC. Obv.: Facing Gorgoneion with hair of snakes, sticking out tongue, snakes below face. Rev.: Upwards standing Anchor, letter A to left and crayfish to right. Reference: SNG Stancomb 135-137.
I've always like these coins. Your coin is in great shape. APOLLONIA PONTICA AR Drachm OBVERSE: Gorgoneian facing with snakes for hair and a protruding tongue REVERSE: An anchor flanked by letter A and a crayfish, which represents the minting city of Apollonia, the major fifth century BC Greek colony on the west coast of the Black Sea, modern Sozopol in Bulgaria Struck at Apollonia 450-400 BC 3.13g, 14-15mm BMC IX, Black Sea 150-151
Glad you're feeling better! I had pnemonia back in November, and I'm still coughing up stuff... Not fun.
I just stopped coughing yesterday, but that's after 6 days of taking 2 different types of antibiotics, plus some little yellow pill they gave me for cough control that is so powerful that every time I take it I can't do anything for the next 2 hours as my mind starts to run on a 2 second delay with the rest of my body (or at least that's what it feels like in the daze that thing leaves me in).
glad you feel better sallent...and you have a cool new coin. yet anthoer type that is "on my list". keep popping those little yellow pills!
I notice that both 'posters' posted the reverse with opposing 'tops'. Is there an accepted right way up for the 'Anchor'?
I should add I also got this one Maximian from Auction #24, namely because I have the Diocletian XXI Antoninianus and wanted the matching one for Maximian. And now the matching Diocletian
Glad you're feeling better! Remember, the first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club.
Apollonia Pontica, did somebody mention Apollonia Pontica? Been lurking for quite a while, but couldn't help but jump in when this polis was mentioned: Apollonia Pontica Topalov 38 - Silver Drachm 480/478 – 470 B.C. Silver Drachm 3.36 gm., 15 mm. Obv: Anchor; blank to left, crayfish to right Rev.: Gorgon head facing in archaic Ionian style with hair in pellets Topalov Apollonia p.584, 38 struck over Topalov Apollonia p. 566, 12 BMC Mysia p.8, 3, Pl.II, 2 Best of two types here with the anchor struck over an older swastika with dolphins.
