Just finished reading this, nice interview with Halran J Berk. Even touches on slabbed ancients and all what we echo. http://www.coinweek.com/featured-ne...lan-j-berk-on-the-modern-hobby-ancient-coins/
I liked it too...and there was mention of a Ptolemy book coming out. Hopefully it doesn't cost $100+ like so many other books I want to buy.
I'm too busy, I don't have time to read the article ... just jokes, Mat (I quickly thumbed through it) Who is Harlan Berk? (is he kinda like Doug Smith?)
=> yah, that's because Doug is a fricken hoarder!! ... just jokes, my friend (don't panic and give away your coins!!)
Seriously, folks, if you do not know who Harlan Berk is you should run to your bookshelves and apologize for not owning anything of his. The fact that he is "Just one of the biggest dealers in the world" is secondary to my way of thinking. Send this to Santa with your request for one of each of the 100. Only if you like Byzantine He has one on Byzantine gold, too, but I don't have it (doesn't fit my collection style aka cheap coins).
Me too. Great book. It's going to take a while for me to find the money to purchase the 100 greatest coins though.
OK, I can't resist posting my dreadful "Sulla's Dream" here, since it's a plate coin in 100 Greatest. That's the best thing it has going for it; it really is one of my least favorite coins in my collection. Phil Davis
It's rough but I would welcome it to my collection. I hav several republics that wouldn't be loved by most.
I think Mr. Berk is a smart business man, he also said I do not collect coins I only sell them, you can not be both, collector or seller, he said or else I would keep the best and sell the less / worse coins...this is not possible when you are a seller. But if you bring your nicest coins to him, you would get a low price and sell with a nice story for 5 times more, so too smart man.
Ah, I had wondered why such a grubby coin was chosen to illustrate that entry! Just kidding ... I would LOVE to have that example, or any example for that matter.
