It wasnt automatically some great con job.. especially of this coin is indeed a problem. There are perfectly legitimate shops that will not pay ebay premiums, or premiums in general, for heavily to mid circulated grades and/or problem material, including Indians. Their selling prices are what will tell the story. Perhaps they were just trying to pull one over on you, but perhaps not. Sometimes shops that make what may seem like low offers will also resell at comparatively low numbers as well, especially once a relationship is established. The point is that it's not always as cut and dry as low offer = bad guy.
True but I will say that he low balled me on everything, even the NGC and PCGS graded coins I had. And he was way off on this particular coin that everyone here was saying $50 to $75 more. Just seemed a little shady of a place. Tried it and won't go back.
I don't know the guy and therefore cannot say for sure either way, but is why I said his selling prices (not marked or listed) is the key to the story. You're certainly within your rights to see it however you please, but not everyone operates in the same market, and this simple reality can mean opportunity for those so inclined to look a little deeper.
I should of walked out when I went in to be honest. It wasn't even a store, he wasn't selling anything. It was a counter with a bullet proof window and you handed him coins to look at through a slot in the window. I have no idea what his selling prices were. Anyhow, it is what it is, won't go back.
The incused design of this series makes them very hard to grade. Which is why they were not very popular among numistmatist
Here is a PCGS MS61 I just picked up. The hairlines are not visible from all angles, but you can tell it has them like yours does.
I like the coin and if you do go to sell it, for sake of liquidity not ROI, I'd get it authenticated (certified) by either NGC or PCGS. As for the sellers picks, IMO, he/she was trying to hide the blemishes/marks on the coin. Those hairlines on the reverse do look like the telltale signs of a cleaning, but then again, jwitten's MS61 also exhibit similar lines. This is one of the more difficult coins to judge purely from pictures. I would trust jwitten's guidance on this series as he is an active collector of them. FWIW, I like the coin. Until you decide what you really want out of the coin, it's difficult to give you solid advice.
