What is your rarest Canadian Dominion issue coin?

Since 1870,when the first coins of the Dominion of Canada were issued, there has been a number of scarce & rare coins issued. Some of them are very well known, but others are not so well known.

In my case,it is the 1876H 1c. coin.I wish I had a 1907H 1c.,as that is the very last Canadian coin to have been struck at a mint in England - in this case,Heaton's Mint in Birmingham.

What scarce or rare Canadian coins do you have in your collection?

Canadian coins are of interest to me,as Canada is the largest country in the entire British Commonwealth.

Hhhhmmm let me see, how about my 1871 50 cent mintage 200,000 or my 1938 dollar mintage 90,304 or my 1965 1 cent with pointed 5 and large beads.

John, all of the Canadian silver 50c. coins of Queen Victoria are priced very highly in the 19th. Century Krause catalogue.

The 1938 Voyageur silver $1 is a coin that very seldom crops up.I reckon it is up there with the 1947 Maple Leaf & the 1948 Voyageurs.

As to the Canadian small 1c. coins,I haven't really looked into those to any great depth, apart from pulling out the 1967,1992,& 2002 ones from bulk coins that we've bought in.

I received just two 1970-dated Canadian five-cent pieces, both through circulation, in all my 37 years of collecting. This date is a very low mintage for this denomination.

A few other interesting finds from circulation in upstate New York are a 1953 50-cent piece, a 1963 dollar and a 1978 dollar. The best surprise I ever received while traveling in Canada was a full 20-piece roll in special wrap of 1982 Constitution commemorative dollars at a Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch office in Eaton Centre in Toronto.

I have also accumulated every Canadian small cent in change since the first issue in 1920.

I'm still looking for that 1970 dime. Got the nickel already, but didn't realize the mintage was that low until just now.

Aidan, pull all the 1985 pennies out as well, and check them for a pointed 5. I've found two so far.

    speaking of 1970's...found a 1970 quarter and the '9' is almost a '0'

Chris, can you please post a picture of the reverses of both subtypes of the 1985 1c. coin? I will be going through them.I don't think they are listed in Krause, but they are more likely to be listed in Charlton.

Aidan, the 1876-H 1 cent is a rare coin?

Rexesq, the 1876H 1c. is quite scarce. There was a time in the early 1980's when that date wasn't even listed in Krause.Despite a reported mintage of 4,000,000 coins,it is extremely difficult to find.Out of all the large 1c. coins I've seen,I have only seen 2 1876H's.

I see, a few months back I bought a bag of 8 or so foreign coins from a friend of mine for $1 USD, among them were a French 1899 5 centimes, a Panama 1935 un centesimo, in fantastic condition, an Austrian 1893 10, and 20 heller, and some other un-noteworthy coins, such as a 1957 canadian cent. But, there was also a fairly well circulated 1876-H canadian cent. I'm pleased to hear it's an interesting issue. Even without the 1876-H cent, that bag of coins was worth far more than $1. I tried to give him $3...he refused.

    Here are a couple pictures.

John,it seems strange that the 1859 1c. of the Province of Canada always turns up,yet there is a combined mintage figure of 2,000,000 coins for the 5 known sub-types,but the 1876H seldom turns up.

If you are looking for the 1871H 10c.,you can stop looking,as there are only 2 of these coins known, which have a Canadian reverse muled with a Newfoundland obverse - thus making it more a Newfoundland coin than a Canadian coin.

There was also the case of the famous Voyageur $1 muled with the New Zealand 50c. coin obverse in around 1985.There's been 6 coins reported in Canada, but more unreported coins could turn up.None have been found in New Zealand.

I'm not too much into Canadian coinage but do like the nickels.
My best is a 1926 Far 6. One of these days I'll get a 1925.

Dan,both sub-types of the 1926 are very scarce,as is the 1925.I don't know of any scarce dates in the Canadian small 1c. series apart from the famous 1936 Dot 1c. coin.

Like I said Aidan not big on Canadian. What got me going is that one of local dealers has ABSOLUTELY no respect for it. My first purchase from him was a partial Whitman folder. I paid him 5 cents American for each Canadian nickel. Hell, why not?

When I actually started looking into the series I saw a lot of variety and I like that. So I started "kind of" building the set. I believe I paid $50 for the Far 6 and if I recall it's a solid F12.
I also bought an almost complete roll of circulated 1948 from him way cheap.
As for the 1925 I think it's horribly under rated so will get one someday.

Wouldn't mind a decent 20 Cent Piece some day either but it will wait. There are A LOT of other coins that I want.
