I think that counterfeiters are evolving and using more advanced tools and methods based on their too long experience, cunning and wicked trend. I'm no expert at all, but the OP coin looks more genuine than real authentic ones.
Here is my coin in it's entirity and the match Mine:- The Match:- I will look into taking images of the edge.
Thanks, I wish! THATS THE GOOD NEWS...NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS. If the OP's coin is a cast fake, then the coin he matched it with is ALSO A C/F! I'm presently writing what to look for...
On second thought...I think you all should take a crack at it. I'll post what I see later. This game will be more helpful than just saying what to look for...yes?
Yes, since the flan shapes are exactly the same, they are casts. I believe Martin was posting the second coin as a known fake, to compare with his.
...and the edge defects are in the same place + the "scar-like" hit in the left field across from the belly is a transfer mark.
No.The second coin is not a known fake but is one I tracked down belonging to a collector. I suspect they are both cast fakes
Oh no, two disappointed collectors. IMO, his coin is a "dog" that was etched to hide defects. Your coin is very nice. Wish I owned it. The IAPN in England published Counterfeit Detection Bulletins in the 70's -80's. I don't know if they still do but I'll bet they would like a photo and write up on your coin. I just Googled them (no time to look further) and there must be tons of info on fakes.
Forgery Network and FORVM both have very large databases that are kept current. Martin is actually quite the expert at detecting fakes, and one of the founders of the FORVM database. It just goes to prove that nobody is perfect. Still, if I had any questions about a coin concerning authenticity, he's one of the people whose opinion I would value the highest.
Yes. But there is always a host to a set of casts. There is a very slim chance that the other coin is the host. I doubt it.
I just saw this thread and can add nothing except these images of my coins which I hope are good but I have not checked them against the OP coin. I have always found interest in the variations of legend splits on the obverse of these. Mine were purchased in 1994-1997 when very few people recognized the mint and they were cheap. There are a number of dies and minor style variations. The last one with BIN on the right struck me as unusual enough in 1997 that I bought it even though the other two were better. SEPT _ ALBIN SEP - TALBIN SEPTAL - BIN For comparison the one below is Rome mint.
