1939-D Mercury dime?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by James Rohleder, Jan 27, 2016.

  1. Can anyone tell me what the issues are with the worm looking additions to the axe and the 2 T's in the STATES in this 1939-D Mercury dime? Is this a variety or anything special? Capture_02687-1.JPG

It is lint on your coin. The coin is dirty.:arghh:

Needs conservation. Try acetone to remove green in "E" , fibers on "D" and "S" and fibers you asked about. DON'T rub the coin.

Who asked about fibers? You see fibers and lint on this coin??

What I see looks like die deterioration. But then, I'm getting tired and my eye ache.

Yes, they are the white things the poster thinks are die breaks.

Ol' Cracked-Eye responds:smug:: James you cannot hurt the value of this coin. Would you please run some water over it and "pat dry" it for us. Then tell us what happened to the "Die Breaks."

I sincerely hope they do not come off and I am wrong!

Clue: Look at the first "T" in states. Can you see the SHADOW (tiny dark line) that the fiber is "throwing" on to the surface.:cyclops::yawn:

Clue: I have rarely seen a Die Break (using a stereo scope) that has a "hook" on one end. I'm sure they exist; but this is not one of them.:cyclops::yawn:

No way!! It's a die crack. If I'm wrong, I'll apologize. We need to get some of the "Big Guns" in here to check it out. Or get the OP to blow on it!

The SECOND "T" (STATES) shows what appears, or very well may be "lint". However, the FIRST "T" shows what appears to possibly be a crack. And just for good measure, the blade appears to have a scratch.

You know after blowing up the pic on my PC screen I believe @Insider actually does have his glasses on actually. All three look like fibers. Each has a corresponding shadow to the right of it.

Guys, the ONLY advantage I MAY have over SOME of you is that I have been looking closely at coins for almost 50 years using a stereo scope virtually EXCLUSIVELY.

Now I'm all ready to  if the water does not take the lint, and debris over the "E" and next to the "S" off the coin. Anyway, all our opinions are just that...opinions;)

Okay gents, think of it this way. The OP is a new member, right? Guaranteed he ran his fingers over the coin before he took a picture of the anomaly and sending it to us for analysis. I think he's testing us! Will we pass or fail?
