The latest Numismatic News (May 29, 2007) has an advertisement from Coin Depot offering 2006 reverse proof ASE's for $495 EACH. (limit 2 per customer).

Isn't that about what the whole set will cost you on ebay? A sign of things to come?

A lot of people are predicting that the sets will sell for $1,000 before long.

    Reminds me of ...

I agree - they've changed hands & prices so much & so fast since issue we'll see $1000 soon because thanks conspicuous consumption coin collecting is now chock full of self made 'speculators' hoping to get rich off one coin or set. And the reverse 70's will be the new '95W' ~ the unaffordable 'gee I could kick myself for not getting in on that one' coin. They will very soon sit beside the 99 silver proofs, the 96 prestige and other like coins or sets that perch on shelves or in dealer show cases like trophys. The limits placed by the mint were abused by dealers with 'buddies' all ordering their 10 set limits too and the phenominal increase has forced the average 'collector' who may have truly wanted to just buy & own one to HAVE to sell (imagine the pressure of the spouse, friend or coworker saying 'can you believe they are now selling for 6x issue.. you'd be a fool not to sell' so eventually this set will only belong either to the TRUE collector - the one not selling regardless of the offer - (no matter how much they go up) or the TRULY wealthy. What's the point? Oh, none... I guess. Just a bit amazing to see so much insanity circulating within a 'hobby'.

The economics of supply and demand are alive and well within the hobby of coin collecting. Don't forget that dealers also stocked up on 2000 proof sets that they speculated would sell like hotcakes since it was the millennium but as it turned out, the sets are barely selling at original prices these days. It's hit or miss with this stuff and we all can't win.

Coin Vault is celebrating their 19th anniversary of being in business and sacrificing the 20th Anniversary set in a multicoin holder for $2,999.99 (all three coins graded by NGC at 70). Regular price: $4,999.99! The big guy said it is a sacrifice and the little one agreed.

He should just sacrifice the little guy, he always chimes in in agreement. It the big 'Carnival barker' :loud: and the little baseball card guy congratulating each other!!:high5:

    Elaine,
Never mind. Looks like that is for the sealed sets. I just checked ebay and looks like the opened boxes are going for mid $500s.

    near $700.00 a set

no. it is an open set. you are right. ebay is around mid-$500.00. but, dealer doesn't have it. so they bought it from ebay too. and re-sell them for near $700.00. i thnik soon or later, this set should pass $1,000.00.

I saw an ad in Coin World from Paul Sims for $629.
Multiple bids on Ebay over $500.
Many "buy it now" offers for $699.99; one for $749.95
3 sets in sealed box - "buy it now" $2500

Let's not even talk about the graded sets!
