Someone put one dime on top of another, and thwacked it smartly with a hammer. The impression from the top coin is smashed into the bottom coin, giving the appearance you see here.

    It is post mint damage.

Yes to PMD.. if the Letters and Images are Incused and Reversed then it was impressed with another coin.

Stack two coins on top of each other and hit them with a hammer and you will get that. Some people had too much time on their hands and decided to make that. That could never happen at the mint, unless some guy at the mint brought a hammer and smacked to coins together (Still is Considered PMD in that case too) :). Also, if that was a mint error the collar would restrict the other coin from being so far off center.

Yes, because there are people who buy before knowing, and actually pay for them as "errors."

How many times have we seen threads here on Cointalk where the poster asks "how much is this coin worth that I just bought."

Well, you see, you probably should have asked that question *before* you bought it...

But, to the OP, I hope you eventually find that killer rare error. Maybe a dime struck on a nail?

I'm sorry if I offended you. I wasn't talking about you - I was answering/expounding on what Dave had said. I wasn't directing this to you specifically, in this post, just mentioning something I've seen on CT many times before. I thought we had already answered your question, and the discussion was moving on. Sorry if you were offended.

The only line of my last post directed to you was "I hope you find a killer error." And, I still do. Even if you think I'm an idiot.

To the OP, I think the coin is cool even if it is PMD. I'm not an error collector.

Also, once you hang around here a little while, you'll get a feel for people's personalities. @physics-fan3.14 fan is a respected numismatist and recent author of a book on grading.

Good luck in your hunt! Please don't buy "unsearched" rolls on eBay as they most certainly have been searched and the ends "salted" to catch the unwary.

Fwiw, it appears to be a vise job and the impressed, mirrored image is that of a cent.

Yes, this is a pretty common leisure time activity, apparently. :)

Most of them are just people playing around, but some are created deliberately to deceive. We see one or two a week.
