Does anybody else think this is being awfully picky for a coin this old? There's a tiny scratch behind her cap that I didn't see until I got this grade and really looked for it.
IMO, you got a "gift." Not my personal AU; although I guess I would sell it as one. That is what grading is all about, right...value. IMO, lot's of time the TPGS's will slide a grade when they put a coin in a "details" holder.
IMO, here is the "problem." What is the grading service to do? If they don't put that coin in a "details" holder some sap is going to buy it and possibly pay more money than it is worth. Then, when he goes to sell it...the first thing the dealer says is "The coin is scratched." If they "straight grade" the coin, then all the EX - PERTS who see it are going to "badmouth" the graders at the TPGS and suggest the coin be returned and the error corrected + money for damages.
I'd crack it open and forget about it. Its a nice coin and id want to buy it more if it was out of the slab away from the details grade and ugly yellow ANACS label
If that scratch is totally toned over (and it appears to be), it isn't much of an issue in my opinion. I generally like coins of this value in a TPG holder, but I don't think this one deserves to live with a details grade, break it out and try another service or put it in a nice holder of your own.
I'm not sure how that coin got an AU grade. From the pictures, it looks XF to me. No matter how big the scratch, IMO, the TPG has to identify the problem. I agree with Evan8, free it from the holder and put it in an airtite and enjoy the coin.
IMO, you may be correct. PCGS and NGC are more forgiving on damaged coins than ANACS or ICG. I've heard many dealers brag about what they can get in the top two's slab. Makes good sense...Buy at a discount, crack and submit, straight grade + profit.
I think the grade is correct. I'd keep it as is since you paid for it. When you sell it, the person who buys it will feel the same as you do.
I think it is a really nice looking coin but I like it better as an EF. The scratch is not distracting IMO. I have a DBQ with some tiny toned over graffiti on the rev that you really have look hard to find, in an ANACS details holder (bought in the holder so got a decent price on it).
Scratch doesn't bother me too much , but the fact it is there . Would I put it in my collection ? Yes , if the price was right .
No way that's an AU. It's no higher than an XF40. ANACS is too quick to assign a details grade. I think it's got a good shot for net grading at NGC or PCGS.
Very nice coin IMHO it's an xf40/45 is it damaged to the point I wouldn't pull the trigger no! But there's also a nick in the rim at 12k that would be more of a turn off to me then the other damage . It's a nice coin be happy with it . I can assure you it won't be the last to come back detailed if your coin collector . Heck I had a nickel come back as cleaned out of a roll that had been in my father's safety deposit box for over 60 years. And this roll came right out of a bag from the mint. Go figure right?
As many others have said: 1.) That coin is EF. 2.) That scratch is about 50/50 whether it would straight grade or not. To add to that: 1.) It is not surprising at all that ANACS was off by 5-10 points in grade. This is not unusual for them. This is why nobody respects them. Why do people still send coins to them? 2.) Based on the pictures, the color is very nice and it appears to be original. So that's a plus. 2.) Even if it straight graded, I would not buy that coin. The scratch may be minor/hidden enough to be straight graded on a good day, but do you really want a coin like that in your collection? I wouldn't. Sell it. Buy a properly graded, attractive, problem free, original coin. Sure, you'll pay a bit more. However, you won't be stuck with a "It's a nice coin, but...."
You're sort of missing my point. I agree that it's an XF coin but I just don't see that minor of a scratch in an area that isn't distracting making the coin a "details" coin. I think it's perfectly acceptable for a coin in that grade and of that age to have a minor defect like that and straight grade. I bought this coin raw and sent it to ANACS under their Christmas promotion-7 coins for $75 including return shipping. I really had five gold coins that I wanted checked to be sure they were authentic and I filled in with this one and a trime.
That is precisely the point. There is a scratch behind her head. We can agree on that. The question you are asking is, is that scratch bad enough to give you a details grade, or not? The question I would rather ask is, is that scratch bad enough that I would buy it or not? I don't really care what the TPGs say about it, because I can grade for myself (and have somewhat strong opinions about things, which I'm not really shy about vocalizing... sorry if you get offended by what I say....) The answer to my altered question is "No, I wouldn't buy it," because it is a problem. I don't like problems. I avoid them. I have enough problems at work. I don't need them in my collection.
