Hello there, I found this coin in a hoard of coins. I'm not really sure what it is. My guess is a John II "Castle" coin from the 14th century. Does anyone have an opinion on what it is? I collect 18th and 19th century US coins and happened upon this lot with very little background information on what I was buying. Thank you for your time.

Try looking around 16th century Spain.

    Spartacus,
Looks like a copper maravidi (16 maravidi's?) coin issued by Ferdinand and Isabela in the very early 16th century, the castle and lion are fairly distinct. I have your coin, but am not near any of my photos or reference sources. Size and weight will be helpful in determining denomination.
    Thanks for posting.

It weighs 9.5 grams and is about 30mm. I looked up the Maravedis and have not found a match yet for the date. Thanks for your knowledge, I appreciate it!

    Spartacus,
My example is a 16 maravidis denomination and weighs in at 8.8 grams and 30-30.5mm in diameter. The Castle on yours is a bit different, but that is understandable based on different mints or the mood of the die sinker on that particular day. Hope this helps

Very Nice! I see some resemblance, the lettering looks different though. Maybe mine is a different year or different issuing monarchs? Any Idea how rare they are or what they're worth? Thank you for your information!
