The definition difference between the 2 photos in 4-2C's first post is remarkable. I wonder what kind of light rig they have, it's definitely constant light source.

I'm sure 4-2C has good soft lighting, but the CNG photos just looked way more 3D - something usually attributed to micro-contrast.

The Amphipolis is a perfect illustration. Until about last April, all of the Coin Shop coins were done to the same specifications that esale coins are, as they are to appear on the web. But since we started publishing limited numbers of the Classical Numismatic Review, the Coin Shop coins are now done to print quality. Of course, in both cases the photographers job is not to highlight the color, but rather to display the coin – and its flaws – as accurately as possible. In any case, they're working with upwards of 2000 coins for a printed sale, so some standardization of the process is necessary. 4-2C's photos are lovely and he obviously put a good deal of effort into them, but they certainly play to the coins strengths. To get every coin in the catalog like that would be a Herculean effort.

Besides, then the customers are deprived the joy of receiving their coin to find its even better than they thought!

Here's a photo of the setup for print photos. The main differences between the esale photos are that these have to be reproduced at a 1 to 1 ratio, so there are marked elevations for the camera. Other than that, the rest other differences come about in processing.
