I am trying it your way, M.M. Quality over volume. What do you think? FAUSTINA Snr. Wife of Antoninus Pius. Died 141 AD. Obv:DIVA AVG FAVSTINA, draped bust right. Rev: PIE-[T]AS AVG, Pietas standing left, droppingincense on altar. Silver Denarius AR19mm 3.5gm RIC III 394a BMCRE 311 ;
Stunning portrait on that one, TC! Quality over quantity usually yields true gems in my case, that's the reason why I have only bought 1 coin so far this year! Congrats TC, that coin is a keeper.
That's a good start to 2016. Those Faustina coins are very interesting as a symbol of one man's devotion for his wife. Antoninus Pius must have really loved her, because he deified her and then pumped these coins out for the next 20 years after her death, or basically until he too keeled over.
Fantastic portrait !!!! And a wonderful reverse as well!!! My silver example is of a lesser grade ---- a scarce lifetime issue:
Thank-you, everyone, for your kind comments. I, too, like this one. and M.M. you are right. It IS a 'keeper'.
Pretty sweet OP-addition ... congrats, Topcat7 Ummm, I also have a gorgeous example of this gal ... Faustina Senior. Augusta, AR Denarius 138-140/1 AD Rome mint Diameter: 17 mm Weight: 3.07 grams Obverse: Draped bust right Reverse: Draped throne; transverse scepter resting against arm, peacock with spread tail standing to right below ... great OP-coin
I concur with quality over quantity. I'm not expecting my collection to have more than a few hundred coins by the time i'm finished.
Wha? => that's ridiculous ... the fun is in the hunt and the on-going coin-love ... => gawd, otherwise it would be as boring as looking to buy a new truck every year or so ... what happens in your head, Smeag? ... *whatev* ... I realize that there are other people with that same lame coin-style (hats-off to their dull and low-heart-rate collecting style) ...... zero-fun!! ... ooowww, I betcha that'll twist some undies, eh?
^ to collect is to hoard. i meant, if quality over quantity, do you sell as many as you buy upgrades? If the answer was no, then you're hoarding
Haha. I know some people who limit their collection to 20 top quality pieces. Most of my purchases these days are upgrades... Of course, I still have a lot of "chick coins" to add, and some super-rare emperors. I'd love to have a collection devoted only to big bronze provinicials ... or one coin from each ancient Greek city-state... or a collection of big English crowns, gold nobles and gold unites ... or a collection of every Hadrian Alexandrian drachm... or... I just can't buy them all, Gol :-(
Oh i agree with that also.. Guess what i found today... something I've never seen offered before... ZENOBIA! https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/mi...ninianus_march__may_272ad/639879/Default.aspx Admittedly she doesn't look great, but this sort of thing gets my blood pumping.
