I don't have one from when he was alive with Julius Caesar's portrait on it. This one was struck about 11 months after he was assassinated.

I do have an elephant coin, however. which was struck when he was alive. These are fairly common, but their popularity keeps the prices high.

I didn't realize that Caesar/Antony variety existed, great coin!

I feel you on the Elephant coin. I want one, but it's in that category of coin along with Athenian Owls, Tyrian Shekels, Macedonian Alexanders, etc where the seeming abundance of examples prevents me from pulling the trigger on prices. (Although the Elephants are probably the lesser offenders of those 4 coin types)

Here's my Caesar. The date on the holder says 42 BC, so he was long dead by time this was issued.

The story was this Caesar / Anthony coin was made by a military mint when Anthony was on the run from the Senate's army. My research on the coin showed that this is really nice from the preservation standpoint, but it's struck off-center. If it had been perfectly centered, I probably would not have had a shot at it.

Heh, same deal for me. My denarius up there has half of the reverse missing, which barely put it into my wheelhouse! ;)

The only Julius Caesar I have owned was this denarius in the old Twelve Caesars collection I assembled in 2011-13.

It was something of an ugly duckling, but, hey, it was a lifetime issue struck just before the Ides of March, with a clear (-ish) portrait, and most of Caesar's name visible on the flan.

(The Z- or N-shaped banker's mark was rather interesting, and didn't bother me.)

And most importantly for me, this one came in below the $500/coin budgetary ceiling I was operating under at the time.

In my initial post that you quoted I said "a very important ruler" because I initially took that to be a Constantine I (Constantine the Great) coin. Only at second glance did I notice it actually says "CONSTANTIUS". But same general era. It's late Roman Imperial. Circa 4th century AD.

Julius Caesar was assassinated in the 1st century BC (44 BC, to be exact). So, nearly 400 years earlier.

Here's my lifetime issue of Julius Caesar, struck January or February 44 BCE (just a couple of months before the assassination). Purchased from @John Anthony , ex. @Sallent collection:

    Nicer than mine!

    Probably wasn’t sub-$500, though. ;)

On a related note, anybody know what happened in the Bruun Rasmussen EID MAR denarius auction today? I just checked the listing and it's marked as "not sold" - did it not receive a bid at the starting price? Their estimate of $400-500k USD did seem pretty steep, even for an EID MAR...

Here's a JC I scooped up on eBay last year for $300. Not a portrait issue, but was pretty happy with the price!

Keeping with the theme of less-than-perfect-and-therefore-relatively-affordable JC coins, here is my only example - the classic elephant denarius.
Interestingly, the reverse on this one has been struck with the obverse die (9h). I am not sure how that happened!
Though it's not as valuable or desirable as a lifetime portrait coin, the thought that this very coin was given as payment to one of Julius Caesar's soldiers is pretty cool. I wonder who he was, and if he took much notice of the double strike error.

I bet you were happy with the price! Could've easily been double that. Very nice!

Agreed- that sounds like a sweet price to me. Nice pickup!

Neat. I've never owned an elephant denarius, of course, since that lifetime portrait/Venus one above is the only JC I have ever owned, as mentioned. The double strike on your piece there is interesting.
