I don't know much about error coins, as far as how they happen mechanically. I usually disregard a "scratch" or "gouge" as being a mint error. Today I found a dime with a "gouge" that was different from any I have seen. It is very jagged and the edges of the "gouge" are smooth and rounded. This same dime has the "star-burst" effect on it (which seems to be common)but more apparent than I have ever seen. Also some mechanical doubling on the word "STATES"
So what causes this gouge, if you guys think it's mint related, and what causes the star-burst. Sorry this picture is horrible, I have no scanner and this is the best I can do with my Macbook web cam. But you can at least see the gouge or crack through the word ONE.

The jagged line is not a gouge a die crack. The starburst are flow lines and are on all worn dies.

I thought die crack showed up raised on the coin.

I thought is was, if it isn't it's just a scratch.

Although, it could be looked at.
If the coin is uncirculated, then it is possible (small possibility) that it is a struck thru error.

it's circulated, just not like any scratches I have ever seen. But I have seen some really wierd things that bored people do to coins. I'm getting a scanner next week, I will post better pics then.

It is hard to tell anything from your photo...maybe a strike thru something.

Its not a struck through error, the person who said flow lines and a worn die was right.

    Thanks,

The flow lines are obvious...but it does look like a strike through on the ONE.
