Any Suggestions?

I previously posted about selling a nearly complete American Type Set in a Dansco 7070 album. I was thinking Great Collections, as they seem far safer than EBay.
    However......
Fees out the wazoo. First, they have all submitted raw coins graded by one of the expensive TPG's/ Even at a reduced price, we are talking 60 coins, so over $700 right there. Then there are listing fees and seller fees. In the end, they are eating up around $1000 of my investment.
Any similar places with less ravenous fees?

My suggestion is that you change the title of this thread to include a bit of your question and people in the know might have a much better chance of opening it.;)

I briefly talked to Ian (owner of GC) a few weeks ago and he said he takes 5% for coins under $999 and 0% for coins over $1000 in consignment fees. What other "fees out the wazoo" are you talking about?

I'm fairly certain you can't edit the title of your post once you've posted it.

I understood it was about grading fees.

I'm pretty sure GC sells raw coins. I don't think selling a near complete Dansco would be as marketable as breaking it up because it takes the fun out of filling an album.

I've never sold on GC and don't collect U.S. coins these days so...

I for one would rather buy near complete danscos so don't knock that and their are plenty of buyers like me. BUT your profits will be maximized by breaking it up although does it make sense financially to grade them all is the question. Can we get pics of what you're talking about? We need details to offer suggestions of the best way to go about this :)

Uhhh, due to the rules of the forum - no you cannot.

Posts like this (those of the OP) of a general nature are permitted for the purpose of discussion as to how or what one might do to go about selling his collection or parts of it. But if the OP were to start posting pictures, or providing a list or the items he plans to sell, then he would be in violation of the forum rules. For then he would be talking about specific items he wants to sell which in effect is nothing but an ad, self promotion, making an offer to sell in the regular sections of the forum. Which is specifically forbidden.

The OP can however post an ad to sell his items in the advertising sections of the forum, with pictures and or a list of specific items.

I think you can if you look under "Thread Tools".

Wow, ok. A little strict but I get it. I wasn't asking, I'm not even interested for what it's worth if it came off that way

I was focusing on the part of your post that said "BUT your profits will be maximized by breaking it up..."

That's how I would sell an album (unless I had didn't have time for some reason) - each coin individually.

It's not that it came off that way. I merely posted to inform everyone, not just you.

By their very nature threads like this approach and often even bend the line when it comes to the forum rules. But threads like this are permitted because there often is a real need for some to ask questions because they need help due to their unfamiliarity will selling. And the very purpose of this forum is to provide help, and knowledge, and answer questions.

$12 per coin for grading, times 60 coins, $720. Consignment fees, plus sellers fees, and of course, buyers fees. Add them up for 60 coins in the set, its over $1000 in fees for a single type set

Its true that type collectors cherry pick, because the set is so wide ranging, people have preferences, and budgets. I probably would maximize my take by going individual.
As for GC, their site says that the first thing they do is have the coins graded, so.... Not sure I get a choice.

Their audience doesn't want raw coins. And, much as you're going to dislike hearing this, GC is about the cheapest auction house for fees.

The obvious answer here would be to spend the few necessary minutes it would take to email and discuss this with him. You're not going to be waiting days for a response, and who better to advise you than the man himself if you're considering his services.

I can tell you now though that what it will boil down to is exactly what coins are in the set. If no expense was spared, be it money and/or time, in putting it together, perhaps there are many coins where submission would be in your best interests in order to maximize potential. All depends on the coins, so of course the opposite could be true as well. Perhaps you should sit down and write out an honest assessment of the set and coins within (to the best of your abilities) and go from there. Type sets can go to the extremes value-wise, so all anyone here can do is speculate, which may or may not be helpful in the long run.
