That's a pretty wide range for AU...from 33-61. Sounds a lot like the guys on a foreign coin site(originating in France) that feel a coin is either Unc or XF and that's it. If you try to encourage adding grades they claim PCGS and NGC ruined coin collecting by adding all those different grades.
I mainly buy/sell/collect $2 1/2 coins. There are good enough fakes out there to fool me, but all of his $2 1/2 coins are not even close. Just look overall mushy details, etc.
He just listed a bunch more. Everything is 1 day auction to avoid getting them deleted. Report away! Also, any experts in russian gold? I do not know those well enough. You can see it has "luster", but it is too mushy to be real. Also, looks like a "rare" triple die error, haha.
That $2 1/2 looks bad...generic slab and no close up. Also, if you specialize in $2 1/2 It's hard to believe something in that series could get past you. The original post was a group of $10, and I wanted to get some free instruction in counterfeit detection I've been in over a dozen C/F classes over the decades, use a stereo scope daily, and managed a coin shop for a few years but still much to learn!
I can spot most of the fake $2 1/2, but there are some really good ones out there. The one's he has listed are not good. The picture I posted was a $5 he currently has listed.
If anyone is interested. I just clicked on the http:// from my original question and the 1804 came up: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1926-Ten-Do...638152?hash=item25b511e288:g:UWQAAOSwX~dWnWUT ... Just curious...I've looked at the coins on Ebay. IMO, they are genuine. Let's just focus on the 1904 $10 as that one has the sharpest photo. What exactly do you see on the coin that looks counterfeit? Are you a seasoned gold dealer? Did you learn something in a counterfeit seminar you wish to share with us? Just curious...
Those are your recently viewed items, so when I click on your link, I do not see that one. Click on the auction, copy the auction number, then repost it hear so I can go see it.
But I gotta say, I do not see that he sold a 1904 recently, so you might be looking at another person's auctions
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1904-10-DOL...347b4f6&pid=100039&rk=1&rkt=4&sd=231816319882 THANKS for teaching me how to do this! When I went to the first post here about C/F's, four $10 gold coins came up and I could not believe anyone thought they were bad! The 1904 is above.
That one is not his. Here are his old listings... http://www.ebay.com/csc/bensmitop1/m.html?LH_Complete=1&_ipg=50&_since=15&_sop=13&_rdc=1
I see said the blind man. The 1912, and 1915 are 100% c/f I forgot to say IMO! The Russian gold is c/f and the 1923 $20 is also bad. I think he may have a few genuine coins in the mix. The 1923-D MAY be OK. If you remind me later, I'll give you a few clues to look for in the photos that may help.
